Between refuge and utopia: In his film installation “Pacific Club” (2023), Valentin Noujaïm traces the history of a legendary nightclub in La Défense, the business district of Paris. Founded in 1979, the venue quickly became one of the most vibrant meeting places for young Arabs in the city. In the 1990s, racism, the AIDS epidemic, and gentrification brought this history to an end. 🌃

Valentin Noujaïm is a Franco Lebanese artist and filmmaker based between Paris and Athens. In his practice, he explores how individuals and territories navigate forms of collapse, treating contemporary architecture as spaces charged with narratives, tensions, and latent imaginaries. ⚡️

In our exhibition Subterranean, you can watch the video “Pacific Club” (Video, Video, 16:29 min) in full, exhibited together with his “Gargoyles” (2025). Still on view until Sat, 07.11.2026. ✨

Nails, bits of letters, scratches on the floor and walls, open doors: all of it lies openly exposed in our current exhibition “Subterranean”. 🔩

For her work “Maintenance”, artist Ghislaine Leung asked us to leave the gallery exactly as it looked right after the previous show was dismantled. 🚧 The result: part of the Kunstraum’s history of use is legible; the illusion of the white exhibition space’s neutrality is exposed.

Ghislaine Leung is a British conceptual artist. Her work uses score based instructions to radically redistribute and constitute the terms of artistic production. Leung’s “Maintenance” is on view until Sat, 07.11.2026 at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich. Up for a little trace hunting? Come by!

Mit “Through the lens of…

Few objects embody globalization and mass culture as perfectly as the Monobloc chair. In Marina Xenofontos’s installation “THE NEW FAITHFUL” (2023), the chair becomes a starting point for a reflection on migration, identity, and memory. A counterpoint comes from a tradition rooted in Xenofontos’s home country of Cyprus: the Lemon Dance. 🍋

Marina Xenofontos is an artist living and working in Athens and Limassol. In her installations, she examines the poetics of failure and the marginalization of personal narratives within civic spaces. She is currently representing Cyprus at the 61st Venice Art Biennale with her solo exhibition “It rests to the bones”.

Xenofontos’ installation “THE NEW FAITHFUL” is still on view as part of Subterranean at Kunstraum through Sat, 07.11.2026. 👀

We asked co‑curator Sarah Johanna Theurer .t , who developed the show together with Aditi Kapoor , what sparked the project and how much invisible work goes into making art. 🌬️

Up for a deep dive into “Subterranean”? 🚇

Our current exhibition digs into the hidden subsystems of everyday life. At its centre is the physical and psychological labour that keeps society running - mostly out of sight. 🪞
