This is a great diagram to illustrate how over grown nails can effect the dogs paws and gait.

🐾 Are your dog’s nails too long?
If so, they could be affecting more than just your dog’s feet. Overgrown nails can alter posture, joint angulation, range of motion and overall biomechanics, potentially leading to compensatory musculoskeletal strain and discomfort.
The images on the left show well-maintained nails, while the images on the right show nails that are too long.
Notice how, with overgrown nails, the paw pad is shifted backwards (caudally), often resulting in a splayed foot. This can reduce traction and stability, increasing the load placed on tendons, ligaments and joints. Over time, this may contribute to pain, altered gait (the way your dog moves) and, in some cases, degenerative joint changes such as osteoarthritis.
How can you tell if your dog’s nails are too long?
✔️ When your dog is standing, the nails should ideally not be touching the ground.
✔️ If you hear a “clicking” or tapping sound as your dog walks on a hard surface, it’s a good indication that their nails may need trimming.
Regular nail maintenance is an important part of your dog’s overall health and mobility. If you’re unsure whether your dog’s nails are the correct length, or you’re not confident trimming them yourself, seek advice from a qualified dog groomer or your veterinary practice.
Healthy paws support healthy movement. 🐾
