Edwin Tanner oil on canvas 1957

Tanner maintained a dual careers as both an engineer and as an artist. He was also a
published poet, was a competitive cyclist as a teenager and designed and built his own bike,
he was involved with aircraft design during WWII, was an amateur pilot, and was a crack shot
with a r***e. Interesting — but purely speculative — is that his wife, Shirley, was at school with
Jeffrey Smart, and there exists a likeness in Smart’s work to some of Tanner’s early work, this panting in particular
painting in particular. ⭐️NFS
