⚓ New Community Liaison Group for Port of Hastings

Earlier this week, the Port of Hastings Corporation held its inaugural meeting of its newly formed Community Liaison Group (CLG). The CLG was formed following a call out for volunteers that took place in July 2026.

The CLG is represented by a range of organisations from local business, environment, marine and community stakeholder groups, as well as local residents, local Government and Traditional Owner representatives. You can view the full list of representatives here: https://portofhastings.vic.gov.au/reference-groups

Meeting biannually, the CLG is a forum to share information about Port activities and projects, hear local perspectives from a diverse range of stakeholders, and identify ways to better connect our Port with the community within which we operate.

We’re grateful to the community members who have volunteered their time to be part of our CLG, enabling us to strengthen connections with the community and share information about Port activities and future opportunities

More information on the CLG and other reference groups can be found on our website here: https://portofhastings.vic.gov.au/reference-groups

🌊⚓ Today, we join the global maritime community in marking World Maritime Day 2026.

This year's theme, "From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence," recognises the importance of turning international standards into meaningful action on the ground.

At the Port of Hastings, we are committed to maintaining safe and efficient operations, supporting environmental stewardship, and continuing to invest in the resilience of our port.

Earlier this month we released our Port Development Strategy 2055, which highlights how our port is positioning itself for the future, including our role in supporting trade, energy security and economic prosperity, whilst actively playing our part in sustaining the unique environment of Western Port. https://portofhastings.vic.gov.au/port-development-strategy

Thank you to our marine crews, port operators and industry partners whose dedication and professionalism keep the port operating safely every day.

Happy World Maritime Day to everyone working across the maritime sector.

⚓️ Port of Hastings Community Open Day

On Saturday, 12 September 2026 we opened our gates at the Port of Hastings for a special Port Open Day, celebrating 60 years of commercial operation in Western Port.

Around 400 people joined us across the day and had the opportunity to learn about the Port’s history and what’s planned in the years ahead through the proposed Victorian Renewable Energy Terminal and our newly released Port Development Strategy 2055.

Since the 1960s, Port of Hastings has played a major role in the energy sector thanks to its proximity to the oil and gas fields in Bass Strait, and naturally deep channels which provide easy access for large vessels. We look forward to continuing to play our role in Victoria’s renewable energy transition by providing the enabling port infrastructure through the proposed Victorian Renewable Energy Terminal.

We would like to thank Svitzer Australia, who took attendees on a guided tour of the Oryx tugboat allowing the community to get a firsthand look at the types of vessels which operate in our port every day.

We would also like to thank our event partners, including the Rotary Club of Somerville Tyabb for putting on the BBQ, Dolphin Research Institute Ltd for showcasing the great work they are doing in protecting our marine life in Western Port, Mission to Seafarers (Hastings Branch) for providing support services to sea women and men who arrive at our port, the Hastings-Western Port Historical Society Inc. for connecting us to the history of Western Port and Cribby Koala from Crib Point Community Market for coming along to say hi.

From marine and education displays, Lego building competitions, face painting, food and drinks, and a great sunny day, it was fun for all ages!

Port Development Strategy 2055 Released: A long-term vision for the future of the Port of Hastings.

The Port Development Strategy 2055 has been released, outlining a long-term vision for the future of the Port of Hastings that ensures our Port remains a vital, resilient and sustainable contributor to Victoria’s economy and energy future.

The strategy sets a 30-year plan to transform the Port of Hastings into a sustainable trade and renewable energy hub that drives economic growth, supports Victoria’s net zero goals, and safeguards Western Port’s environment.

The Strategy is guided by six key pillars:

🍃 Supporting the renewable energy transition through offshore wind
⚓ Growing and diversifying our trade mix
🌿 Recognising the value of the Western Port environment
🌏 Protecting the potential of our port to serve Victoria’s future freight needs
⚡ Enabling opportunities across the renewable energy supply chain
⛽ Supporting and strengthening Victoria’s fuel and energy security

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share feedback and help shape the future direction of the Port of Hastings.

Your input has informed a strategy that balances economic opportunity, environmental stewardship and stakeholder interests.

⚓ Port of Hastings Corporation at the Gippsland New Energy Conference

After two days of valuable engagement, insightful conversations and industry connections, GNEC 2026 in Traralgon is complete!

Our CEO Matt Thorpe delivered his keynote address on Day 1 of the conference – The Role of Port Infrastructure in Victoria’s Offshore Wind Rollout.

Attendees heard why port infrastructure matters so much in the delivery of offshore wind, received a progress update on the proposed Victorian Renewable Energy Terminal project, as well as insights into the technical studies that the Port is preparing as part of its Environment Effects Statement.

GNEC is a fantastic event to be part of and one we look forward to attending each year. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth across both days to have conversations, ask questions, and share insights, as well as everyone who attended our keynote address.

Well done to the organisers on delivering another successful conference.

Recently our Port of Hastings Corporation team headed out to the Shoreham Foreshore Reserve for a cultural learning workshop led by the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (BLCAC).

The cold and wet weather didn’t dampen our spirits as staff learned more about the ecosystems that make up Bunurong Land and Sea Country during a guided walk through the forest garden and down on the shoreline.

We were also able to get hands-on learning about various types of fauna, their traditional medicinal and food uses, as well as rocks, seashells and other marine life, and how they tie into Bunurong culture and craft.

We’re very grateful to the team at Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation for lending us their time and expertise, and teaching us so much about Bunurong culture, Country and environmental stewardship.

The Port of Hastings Corporation recognises the importance of a strong partnership with BLCAC.
