Custom furniture should work hard in daily life—not simply look good in a photograph.

That means choosing suitable materials, building for the way the piece will be used and selecting a practical finish. A dining table, vanity, wall unit or outdoor piece will each ask something different of the timber and construction.

Don can talk through those decisions before work begins.

Storage does not always need to look like a box.

This 1400 × 2200 mm Jarrah ladder bookcase was designed around a customer's valuable runner collection. The open A-frame profile creates generous display space while keeping clear views through the shelving.

It is a good example of why custom furniture starts with what the piece needs to hold—not with a standard catalogue shape.

Well-planned furniture can make better use of a smaller home while also making the interior feel more resolved.

This Tasmanian Oak apartment fit-out brought together a television wall unit, bed, bedside tables and bedroom cabinetry. Each piece answered a different storage need, but the repeated timber and detailing made the rooms feel connected.

The right dining table begins with the room—not a standard size on a showroom floor.

This custom Messmate setting was made at 2100 × 1100 mm for a client near Glenlyon. The generous top creates a substantial everyday dining surface, while the tapered legs and clean underframe keep the design visually light.

Matching Oslo chairs carry the timber tones through the complete setting.

Thinking about a custom piece? You do not need finished drawings before speaking with Don.

A useful first enquiry can be as simple as:
• what you would like made
• where it will go
• rough measurements
• photos of the room
• any inspiration images
• what the piece needs to store or do

From there, Don can talk through the design, timber, finish and practical details.

Why combine painted cabinetry with real timber?

This custom kitchen island pairs fully finished 2PAC cabinetry with Victorian Messmate. The clean painted surfaces give the piece a refined, durable finish, while the timber top and legs add warmth and make the island feel more like furniture than a standard cabinet.

It was built as part of a broader architectural home fit-out, with every detail designed around the space.

A dining table designed to be the centre of the room.

This custom 2000 × 1000 mm Messmate table combines a double-edged top, black resin detailing and a clear two-pack finish. Australian-made powder-coated X-leg bases give the piece a strong contemporary profile while keeping the timber as the feature.

The design began with a similar table the Melbourne client had seen on our page, then was adapted to suit their home.
