Meet Sledge Taylor of Buckeye Farms in Como, Mississippi 🌱

After 53 years of farming, Sledge knows his land. But as he told Irrigation Leader this month, it's hard to look at a field and know whether it needs water.

That's why he uses . Our probes read moisture every 4 inches, and once his cotton is big enough, they also read leaf temperature to show how stressed the crop is. Now Sledge does one or two fewer irrigations a season while growing a crop that's as good or better.

Thanks for sharing your story, Sledge, and for three great years of working together. Read the full interview here πŸ‘‰ https://irrigationleadermagazine.com/volume-17-issue-9-october/

NSW irrigators, don't leave your meter telemetry to the last minute! ⏳

Telemetry is required by 30 June 2027, and right now eligible landholders in the Murray-Darling Basin can get it at no upfront cost through the NSW Telemetry Uplift Program.

That covers your device, installation and the first 12 months of service. πŸ’§ You'll get water-use data every 15 minutes and an app that works whether you're in the paddock or states away.

Funding is first-come, first-served, and 450+ installations are already underway. If you've got an entitlement of 100ML or more (or used over 100ML in any of the last three years), you could be eligible.

Registering takes a few minutes. We'll take care of the rest.

Trait 5 of High Performance Irrigation Masterclass: Time the last πŸ’§

Your final irrigation should carry the crop through late boll filling and stop there.

Get it right and you sustain the bolls that matter, avoid excess late growth, and set the up for timely maturity and strong fibre quality. Get it wrong and you're either cutting yield short or wasting water that only feeds regrowth and makes defoliation harder.

The rule is simple: meet crop requirements, nothing more.

Priority 1 or Priority 2? Know your deadline.

If you're a water user in the Queensland Murray-Darling Basin, your Management Area sets when your meters need telemetry.

Priority 1, required by 1 December 2026
Condamine and Balonne, Condamine and Balonne Tributaries, Lower Balonne, Moonie, Upper Condamine and Stanthorpe.

Priority 2, required by 1 December 2027
Border Rivers, Callandoon Creek, Gowrie and Oakey Creek, Macintyre Brook, Upper/Northern/Lower Weir River, and the Warrego, Paroo and Nebine catchments.

The good news? The subsidy covers your device, installation and first 12 months of data services and maintenance, at no upfront cost.

βœ… Water data every 15 minutes
βœ… Fewer trips out to check readings
βœ… Auditable, tamper-evident records

Places are first-come, first-served while funding lasts. Priority 1 growers, your deadline is only months away, so don't leave it late.

What's triggering your next irrigation? πŸ’§
If the answer is "we've hit refill point," you're only working with part of the picture.

Trait 4 of our High-Performance Irrigation Masterclass is about irrigating on the threshold. Not too early. Not too late. Just right.

The best growers get there by lining up every piece of information together:
🌱 Soil moisture
🌑️ Plant stress
β˜€οΈ Weather
πŸ“ˆ Crop stage

When all four align, the timing call becomes clear, and the best growers hit it consistently, season after season.

A regional forecast can tell you it might this week. It can't tell you what's happening in your paddock right now. 🌦️

That's where an on-farm weather station earns its keep. Real-time, hyper-local data on temperature, humidity, rainfall and more, means you can:

βœ… Spot environmental conditions early and time your
βœ… Adjust to avoid wasting water or stressing your
βœ… Nail your and windows around frost and soil temperatureconditions
βœ… React quickly when a storm, wind change, cold snap or dry spell rolls in

When conditions change fast, the right data helps you make the right call.

From unreliable probes to a farm-wide network - meet Cowal Agriculture. 🌱

When Cowal's old soil moisture probes started letting them down, they turned to Goanna Ag's solution. The result? Better forecasting, smarter scheduling, and a lot more confidence in tight decision windows.

"The uplift in management information was immediate, especially in forecasting crop water use and scheduling irrigations," says Greg Kauter of Cowal Agriculture.

Today, that single fix has grown into a connected network across all eight of Cowal's properties, moisture, , , and monitoring, all in one app.

Trait 3 of our High Performance Irrigation Masterclass series tackles the most important window in the season - The 400DD period from first flower to cut out.

Why does this matter so much?
Because 90%+ of your cotton is generated and set during this window. Every degree of heat stress the plant experiences here can cost you.

Keep your crop below 34Β°C and react to what the plant is saying through your canopy data.

Ask a grower on the Yorke or Eyre Peninsula how full their profile is right now and you'll get an answer most haven't been able to give in a decade! 🌾

Our own Leet Wilksch has written about the season that's unfolded across southern Australia this year, and what the soil moisture probes are really showing beneath the surface. From bigger nitrogen calls on and , to trouble in some low-lying lentil paddocks, it's a great look at how data is changing the way dryland make decisions.
