Installed last week — a bespoke wall cabinet created in collaboration with HUNTER.ID | Alison Hunter

The design is made up of a series of black boxes, conceived as though they had been thrown at the wall and landed in a seemingly random configuration. The composition was designed to draw attention away from the television and make it a less dominant element within a bedroom.

Each of the open boxes provides a space for displaying precious objects, with integrated LED lighting bringing the individual pieces to life.

The cabinet below provides concealed storage through 10 push-to-open drawers of random sizes and varying depths.

Made from Oak, finished with Fiddes Australia ebony stain and matt hardwax oil.

I’m very pleased to have my Tree Cabinet included in Plant Life: The Nature of Design, now showing at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.

The exhibition explores humanity’s evolving relationship with the plant world through design, bringing together more than 60 works spanning furniture, architecture, decorative arts, craft, photography and film — from traditional approaches to natural materials through to new and regenerative ways of making.

My Tree Cabinet was made using burr Elm salvaged from trees felled during the Great Storm in the UK in 1987. The burr Elm was carefully book-matched to evoke the original form of the tree’s trunk and branches against a background of ebonised Red Gum — a reflection on resilience, renewal and the history held within the material.

I’m especially proud that Tree Cabinet is now part of the NGV’s permanent collection, having been acquired in 2025 from my exhibition The Storm, The Craft & The Future.

What became apparent as I was preparing for LATENT SPACE: TRADITION REFRAMED was that it was less a one-off show and more an opportunity to articulate a theory that’s been quietly coalescing over recent years. It was wonderful to be able to discuss it with so many people over the course of the exhibition, and consider how it can continue to evolve as a body of work. All this is to say, watch this space!

Thank you to my loyal clients, long-term supporters and interested design lovers for coming to see these pieces over the course of the week. It’s the final weekend of Melbourne Design Week and your last chance to enjoy the tactile experience of my LATENT SPACE: TRADITION REFRAMED exhibition. I’m staying open late tonight so you can get along and see this beguiling Dressing Table from every angle. Contemporary – in fact almost post-modern – this piece also brandishes pieces of the past in its Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences as an example of maintaining tradition while ensuring continuity within modern-day making.

I’m also open Saturday and Sunday and I’d love to see you in my atelier for a chat and a look behind the scenes of my processes and inspirations.

Above / Below marks the next iteration in the embryonic Tree Series that began with the centrepiece Tree Cabinets in 2025’s The Storm, the Craft & the Future exhibition. In this version, the tree extends beyond the visible trunk and canopy to include its root system and collapse the separation between above and below. What’s normally hidden is made present.

Two doors, 728 pieces of Fiddleback Tasmanian Blackwood and 182 Huon Pine dots for a total of 912 individual pieces – and that’s before you take in the cabinet, drawer shelving and leg frame. Who’s game enough to estimate the number of hours that went into putting them all together to construct my 728 / 182 Encoded Field cabinet?
