Preserving the past, riding into the future. The Atherton - Herberton Historic Railway Inc. Railway Museum open Saturday and Sunday 9.00 am to 3.00pm

Our Railway is proudly volunteer-run, restoring and operating heritage train rides (on the 2nd and 4th weekend of each month) while keeping our region’s railway history alive. was formed in August 2003 with the intention of restoring the disused railway line between Atherton and Herberton a distance of 22klms. Our organisation is run and managed by volunteers and we are always on the lookout for new members.As we are not presently running train trips we are relying on external funding along with the generous support of a number of small business. We have been able to commence sleeper replacement in earnest due to the generous contributions of a Mr Don Walker who served Herberton shire council for 28 years as well as owning and managing a tin mining and timber industries in the area. Our train rides will be operating from Herberton station to the Herberton Historic Village on a regular Sunday timetable. Train rides 10.00 am to 3.00 pm Sunday

Herberton station is the home of the only railway museum in far north Qld.

All fixed !
Our 1905 Peckett Steam loco, needed some extra love.... and the workshop team put in long hours on Saturday and Sunday, to have her all good again.

Due to a major technical problem with our 1905 Pickett steam locomotive, we have to cancel our steam loco runs today and tomorrow.
We will be running out section car for customers that still want a ride. We will reschedule your bookings to another day, refund or if you have a current booking we will get you on.

Third weekend in a row!
Yes, we're running this weekend with two long runs to Moomin on both Saturday and Sunday. 10am and 12:15.
Extra great coffee and homemade cakes for our volunteer crew (the only way we can keep them happy) just as well our refreshment room team are great barristers and cooks.🤣

Well big day at the Herberton railway station today. Celebrating 116 years since the rail made it to Herberton in 1910. We had the cake and to set the atmosphere we had a Steam Punk band, Littmus. Also thank you to all the steam punk people that turned up, all dressed up WOW.
To our AHHR team, thank you and a special thank you to Tablelands Regional Council for supporting the event. We really appreciate the support.

Sunday the 18th October, a big day of celebrating 116 years of the rail line making it to Herberton.
As part of the event we have a Steam Punk band from 10 am and at 12:30 the cutting of the cake ! Plus for the best Steam punk outfit and cool prize.
We will have four runs to Moomin from Herberton so 10 am, 11:20. 12:45 and 2 pm.

This Sunday we have our Steam Punk themed day. Included is a best dressed “Steam Punk” outfit competition. The winner this year will receive a one off Steam Punk character created and donated by Linda of Cadaghi Pottery, Herberton.

The boys are given the Peckett a nice clean up in preparation for our busy weekend coming up. Jacaranda Festival Herberton this Saturday and our birthday celebrations of the Herberton train station and line, opening back in 1910 in October of that year. Yep still being used 116 years on.
So Craig, Bill and Jon, well done.
Hope to see everyone over the weekend in Herberton.

This Saturday is Jacaranda Festival in Herberton.
To support the day, Saturday 17th Jacaranda Day: We are running changed times and fees.
Moomin run at 10am. Normal fees.
Then we're doing Bridge 20 runs 11:15, 12 noon 12:45, 1:30 and 2:15. These are shorter runs of 25 minutes and lower fees of $20 per Adult , $10 for Kids and Concession at $18.

We are all looking forward to the day. Our booking system has just been updated to assist with online bookings for Saturdays options.

Last charter from Great Value Holidays for 2026, with a special trip to Moomin and back. We've had 26 charters this year from GVH, Railway Adventures and a special NZ group that came to Herberton and next year looks even bigger.
Big thank you to all our volunteers, being train crew, refreshment room team and AHHR workshop team that keep us all going.

We have three big running weekends in a row coming up, so all hands to the coal pit !
Weather has turned stunning and the Jacaranda's are all in flower, so come on up to Herberton for a fun day out.
