A set of 10 Victorian mahogany dining chairs.
These chairs underwent major restoration.
Most of the joints were loose, there were also broken pieces and lots of really bad old repairs using nails….
Chairs were dismantled, joints repaired old glue scraped away, fresh glue added and then chairs were re assembled and clamped.
The next process was to strip the polyurethane that had been added on top of the original shellac. Once this was done the surfaces were sanded by hand sympathetically without trying to lose too much patina.
The next step was to French polish them with shellac and once we were happy with the depth of polish, we cut them back and wax polished them.
The chairs now look like they have been loved and maintained for the last 150 years.

I spotted this chair at my father in laws house a while back.
He had been using it as an outdoor chair and it had suffered the ravages of time and weather.
The last photo shows the condition it was in when I found it.
It was clearly a mid century chair and interesting enough to look into.
I shot a few pics through to my friend Geoff who was as excited as I was.
I asked my father in law if I could restore it for him on the condition he no longer use it as an outdoor chair 😂.
He agreed so I took it to the workshop.
The timber was grey and the vinyl was torn.
It had also had a few terrible joint repairs two of which were still serviceable so I left them alone.
The grey timber was sanded to reveal beautiful teak which I hand polished and replaced the vinyl. Now good for another few decades.
Now here is the interesting stuff thanks to the detective work and knowledge of Geoff
This “T” back chair is a Kjel Grant design manufactured by William Latchford Co. in Box Hill Melbourne with licensing by Formplan which is an international Danish company and still going today.
The chair model A11 was designed circa 1963 and was released on the Australian market in 1964 as part of an office group (desks, chairs etc).

A little job I did for myself.
I’ve had this piano stool sitting in a shed for years. I decided to give it a makeover so it would suit the mancave/music room and use it as a guitar stool.
I stripped away the old varnish and painted it black and replaced the fabric with black leather.
