Column collection by Gabriel Tan for ARIAKE .

Close every drawer and the handles stack into one neat line down the front. That’s the column. Each handle is fixed with a dovetail joint, so there’s no hardware, just timber locked into timber. 
Small drawers up top for watches, rings and the things you don’t want to lose. Deeper ones below for everything else. Both pieces sit up on legs, which makes the bottom drawer easy to reach and the floor easy to clean.

There’s a chest, and a night table in two heights. Oak, or ash finished in sumi ink.

Wing Lux Trestle Table by Kiyoshi Sadogawa for Conde House.

The first thing you notice is what’s missing: no legs at the corners. Pull a chair in, sit down, stretch out. Nothing gets in the way of your knees.

The legs are softly rounded, with crisp edges. It’s a small detail you feel more than see. The top is solid Hokkaido timber with the grain left to speak for itself, knots and all. It also sits a touch lower than most dining tables, so long dinners feel more like lingering on the couch.

MENU by Hiroshi Akutsu for 宮崎椅子製作所　Miyazaki Chair Factory.
A dining chair pared back to thin, slender parts. It’s so light that Miyazaki says you can lift it with two fingers. A frame this fine takes a high level of woodwork, and you can see it in the backrest, curved down to the smallest detail.

It comes in two versions: the side chair, and the armchair for longer evenings at the table. Frames are walnut or oak, with seats in leather, fabric or velvet.

The silhouette of the Homage Stool by Note (design studio) for ARIAKE is distinctive.

The backrest is small, almost minimal, but instantly recognisable. A repeated “T” junction supports the light, circular seat and frame, holding everything together in a space-conscious form.

Ballett Lounge Chair by Tomoyuki Matsuoka for Nissin Furniture Crafters.

On its own it’s a personal lounge chair. Line up two or three and it becomes one long sofa. The pieces gather or spread out as you need, so the room can change with you, and with the household as it grows or shrinks.

Ballett is Nissin’s 80th anniversary model, made in Hida Takayama, Gifu, where the company has built furniture since 1946.

Uni Master by Kai Kristiansen for 宮崎椅子製作所　Miyazaki Chair Factory .

The Uni Master grew out of the Uni Senior (4110), a Kristiansen design that Miyazaki brought back and refined. The arms are wide and almost flat, so there’s somewhere to rest your elbows long after dinner is over.

The frame comes in walnut or oak, each in a range of finishes. Since 2023 it has also been made with a papercord seat. The cord wraps around the whole seat frame, where leather and fabric sit inside it. Leather and fabric versions are available too.

Room to discover. Our new Collingwood showroom, written up by Jan Henderson for Indesign Magazine.

Thank you, Jan. You saw what we hoped people would feel walking in: calm, order, and space to find a piece on your own terms. It means a lot to have the room read so closely and so generously.

Thank you to Mark Simpson, Damien Mulvihill and the team at DesignOffice, who turned a plain white shell into a showroom of framed views and quiet sightlines. Deep eggplant, chocolate and mustard instead of timber, so the furniture carries the wood. A tokonoma for single pieces. A chair library beside the stair, so you meet each chair one at a time.

A-S01 sofa and A-DT02 dining table by Keiji Ashizawa for Karimoku Case. N-SW01 swivel chair by Norm Architects.

House in Yatsugatake. A single-storey retreat at 1,500 metres on the Yatsugatake plateau, built for family, friends and guests to gather in across the year.

The house bends around its garden so that every room opens straight to the outside. Low openings beneath the eaves hold the forest as one continuous horizontal band, and a skylight draws daylight deep into the plan. Existing trees were kept wherever they could be, so the architecture and the landscape run into one another rather than meeting at a line.

Look at what is in the rooms. The sofa was drawn for Kinuta Terrace. The dining table for Azabu Residence. The dining chair for a cafe in Shanghai, the side table for a cafe in Nagoya, the swivel chair for a hotel above Shinjuku. Five pieces made for five specific rooms, brought together in a forest and behaving as though they were always one set.

That is the argument for Karimoku Case in a sentence.

Taliesin Wall Sconce. Frank Lloyd Wright for Yamagiwa.

In 1933 Wright was converting the old Hillside Home School gymnasium at Taliesin into a theatre, and he made a lamp for it. Rectangular boxes of solid wood, cantilevered off a spine, arranged the way branches and leaves arrange themselves.

He thought light coming through foliage was the most beautiful light there is.

So the boxes do not diffuse the lamp. They interrupt it. Light escapes in slots above and below, the wall takes the glare, and what reaches the room has already been softened twice.

Two sizes. Taliesin 2 is a single box and one shelf, 268 high. Taliesin 3 stacks three, 420 high.

Switched off, it still earns the wall.
