Delivered a couple of months back now. This was a big sofa, the fabric, Carrara by Zepel Fabrics was a pleasure to sew with, which was good as there was a fair bit of sewing to be done..…35m of piping to start with.
A set of 2 carvers and 6 dining chairs.

My client’s grandfather: Allan McCallam, was a professional cabinet maker. He made these chairs which resceived a full restoration. timerwork thanks to Steve Thomas. New upholstery, finished with Ozark fabric in oyster by Warwick Fabrics Australia. The Coachwood frames came up a treat, finished with a clear satin lacquer to allow the beauty of the wood to shine.
That stunning grandfather clock was also made by Allan in 1958, isn’t it fabulous!

I’m in love with this gorgeous little Lloyd Loom chair. The patina of the canework alludes to a life well lived for this little beauty. Who by the way, is also extraordinarily comfortable.

Sometimes, what seems like a straightforward recover job, reveals itself to be quite something else…
As I stripped back this chair layer by layer; the dilapidation became more evident. Starting with a perfectly circular burn in the calico each layer surpassed the last in degradation.
Here are some shots of the traditional upholstery build of the new seat. After the springs came the coir fibre stuffing, which I missed photographing, due to being in the flow 😂.
The profile edge is formed by hand stitching into the stuffing pad, using a bigassed double sided needle: essentially capturing the coir fibre and stitching into a firm, stable front edge of the seat.

Two incredibly beautiful antique French armchairs. Too far gone to preserve they required a full strip and rebuild.
I had the pleasure of sharing the start of the restoration on the pair with Aiya Dreaming
And the intrepid Beans 🐈⬛ put on a brief appearance.what you see in the strip Dow. Is a blink it took the two of us a full day to get down to bare frame. After that it went to Steve Steve Thomas. To have the frames repaired in places and refinish the bun feet.
Each chair had a total of 35 springs: 5 in each arm, 9 in the backs and 16 in the seats.
I encountered some differences in the rebuild, and the French do have traditional upholstery techniques that differ in part from the English methods.
But they were an engaging couple of old gals to have on my workbench.

These 2 chairs received all new upholstery a timber clean and refresh and were finished in the very eye catching ‘Flowerbomb’ by Warwick Fabrics Australia.

For Emily….what a difference a new dress makes.
This chair was part of Emily’s childhood. When I stripped the grey cover off, the original peachy cover she remembered as a child had been left on by previous upholsterer. We managed to salvage and wash a piece that was not worn through and made a small cushion in homage to those memories.

Little bench seat cushion (one of two). I did awhile back.
I got a snap when I visited the property to pick up some more chairs for restoration.
I’m loving the colours and these sweet bench frames made from an old iron bed frame.
Outdoor fabric is ‘Get Out’ by UV Pro, in Coral.
