Due to health reasons, Perth Saddle Fitting is not accepting bookings at this time. In the interim, I suggest Saddle Fitting by Elizabeth Moore for those in need of a fitting.

I’m sure I’ve posted about this before, but it just keeps happening. This was pulled out of a CAIR saddle this weekend. This “flocking” should never be placed in a saddle fitted with CAIR cushions. Please don’t be shy to ask exactly what is being put into your saddle and make sure that your Saddle Fitter always uses the correct materials/parts appropriate for your brand of saddle as recommended by the manufacturer.

And that’s a wrap for 2023 Saddle fitting 🎉
Wishing all of my clients a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🎄
I will be taking some time off over the holiday period and look forward to returning to work on January 9th.
Happy trails!! 🐴

Billets are often the unsung hero on your saddle and their health and integrity are vital to ensuring you and your saddle do not part company from your horse.

Below in the first photo you can see the old billets are showing signs of cracking, the leather has degraded and the holes have stretched.

This is concerning due to the risk of the billets snapping, or the leather splitting between billet holes and merging into the next hole down. Both of which may result in serious injury if your saddle becomes unstable/loose during riding.

In the second photo you can see the difference between the old and the new billets. Ideally your billets should look like the ones in the last photo, but if you think your billets are starting to resemble the ones above, please ask your saddle fitter to check and or replacement them at your next fitting.

Very excited for this new addition to the Bates lineup 🎉. The Bates Kimberly Half Breed has to be the most advanced half breed I’ve ever seen. As fully adjustable as other Bates saddles, with all the features we’ve come to expect from them.

When purchasing second hand saddles it’s so important to insist on a pre-purchase health check or ask the seller when the saddle last had a health check performed by a qualified Saddlefitter.

This is essential to ensure that the saddle you are purchasing is in safe working condition for you and your horse before you ride.

A pre-purchase health check should include:
- Checking the tree thoroughly for cracks/damage
- Excessive flexing and unusual sounds
- Checking the health of the panels to ensure they are free from lumps, bumps or divets and are symmetrical and even
- Checking billets for signs of wear including cracking, elongated holes or stretching he king the stirrup bars are securely attached and not bent, loose or damaged
- Checking the outer covering material (leather or synthetic) surface is in good condition, as well as checking that all fittings are securely attached

This saddle below sadly had some small cracks that were hiding very insidiously that have rendered it unusable for riding. Fortunately the saddles owner had a health check prior to riding her horse in it, and we were able to identify these issues straight away.

If you’re considering purchasing or selling a saddle second hand and it’s been too long since the saddle was assessed by a Saddlefitter, please consider getting a pre-purchase health check done to ensure the safety of both horse and rider.

Believe it or not, all of this came out of one saddle today. It really demonstrates the importance of being aware of exactly what is going into your saddle, and to never be afraid to ask your saddle fitter what materials they’re using. This was pulled out of a CAIR saddle where it had no business being
