Japanese People and the Culture of Silence on Trains 🇯🇵
Japanese people greatly value respect for shared spaces, and this is clearly reflected in the culture of silence on trains. On the train, nearly everyone remains silent, minimizing noise to avoid disturbing others. You will notice that they:
- Do not talk on the phone: This is taboo on trains; even if there is an incoming call, Japanese people often quickly turn off their phone or switch it to silent mode.
- Speak softly: If they do speak, they whisper very quietly to avoid drawing attention.
- Sleep, read, or look at their phones: These are common ways people spend time on the train without disturbing those around them.
This stems from the principle of "not causing inconvenience to others" (迷惑をかけない), an important value in Japanese society. Especially during rush hour, when trains are packed, keeping silent becomes the only way to create a comfortable environment for everyone.
For newcomers to Japan, this culture may feel a bit restrictive and stifling, but in reality, it helps maintain order and peace in public spaces—a unique characteristic of Japan.
