dFin – The Financial Arm of Dnet successfully conducted a workshop on “Risk-Based Supervision and IFRS-9 in the Banking Sector of Bangladesh” on 09 May 2026 at Dhaka Golden Inn, Banani Lakeside, Dhaka.

We were delighted to welcome 59 professionals from banks and financial institutions, bringing together mid- and senior-level executives from Risk, Credit, Trade, Audit, Finance, and Compliance.

We are grateful to our distinguished experts Dr. Shah Md Ahsan Habib (Professor, BIBM & Independent Director, IPDC Finance) and Mr. Md. Nehal Ahmed (Professor, BIBM & Former Director, Dhaka School of Bank Management), for sharing their invaluable insights and expertise.

Dnet in association with iSocial spent an incredible afternoon at DRAPAC 2026 (organized by Digitally Right and EngageMedia) discussing how to move from AI exclusion to empowerment. It’s not just about the technology, it's about the people it affects.

From advocating for garment workers’ rights to ensuring the independence of data regulators, the discussion was both intense and thought provoking.

Dnet and dFin are pleased to offer a day-long training on
Risk-Based Supervision (RBS) and IFRS 9 in the banking sector of Bangladesh.

The program will cover key concepts of Risk-Based Supervision, including risk identification, risk assessment frameworks, supervisory processes, and practical challenges in Bangladesh. It will also address IFRS-9 fundamentals such as expected credit loss (ECL), staging criteria, provisioning approaches, and implementation issues faced by banks. The target participants are mid-level and senior-level bank executives, particularly those working in risk management, credit, trade, audit, finance, and compliance functions.

Session 1: Risk-Based Supervision -Conceptual Framework [Principles and evolution of RBS; Risk identification and risk categories; credit, market, operational Risk assessment and scoring methodologies; Supervisory tools and early warning systems]
Session 2: Risk-Based Supervision-Bangladesh Context and Issues [RBS framework adopted by Bangladesh Bank; Practical challenges in implementation; Case examples from local banks; Role of governance and internal controls]
Session 3: IFRS-9-Conceptual Framework [Overview of IFRS-9 and its significance; Classification and measurement of financial assets; Expected Credit Loss (ECL) model overview; Staging Criteria]
Session 4: IFRS-9-Bangladesh Implementation & Challenges [ECL model application in banks; Data requirements and modelling challenges; Regulatory expectations in Bangladesh; Common issues and best practices].

Training Facilitators:
Dr. Shah Md Ahsan Habib, a professional with 30 years of experience in banking and finance is a Professor of BIBM, Independent Director, IPDC Finance PLC.

Md. Nehal Ahmed, a professional with over 28 years of experience in the banking and finance front, is a Professor of BIBM and Former Director of Dhaka School of Bank Management, BIBM.

At the dFin and Dnet-hosted "Risk Conference on Banking and Finance 2026," Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) Chairman Mashrur Arefin stated that he does not fundamentally support the proposed provision in the Bank Companies Act that calls for 50% independent directors on bank boards.

"আর্থিক ঝুঁকি এড়াতে ঋণ দেয়ার আগেই গ্রাহকের ফাইন্যান্সিয়াল লিটারেসি সম্পর্কে জানা দরকার। একই সঙ্গে ঝুঁকি ব্যবস্থাপনায় নীতিমালার সঠিক বাস্তবায়ন জরুরী। সকালে গুলশানে ডিফিন ও ডিনেট আয়োজিত ব্যাংকিং এবং আর্থিক ঝুঁকি বিষয়ে সম্মেলনে এসব কথা বলেন সাবেক অর্থ উপদেষ্টা ড. সালেহউদ্দিন আহমেদ। সম্মেলনে বক্তারা বলেন- এই মূহুর্তে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতি বড় ধরণের পরিবর্তনের মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছে, বিশ্ব অর্থনীতির সঙ্গে বাড়ছে সম্পৃক্ততা। এ কারণে বাড়ছে ঝুঁকিও। তারা বলেন- মধ্যপ্রাচ্য পরিস্থিতি শুধু জ্বালানির দামে প্রভাব ফেলছে না, এর সার্বিক প্রভাব পড়বে ব্যাংকিং খাতে। এ সময় সালেহউদ্দিন বলেন- বাংলাদেশে ঝুঁকি ব্যবস্থাপনায় অনেক নীতিমালা থাকলেও এর সঠিক ব্যবহার হয় না। বাইরের হস্তক্ষেপ বন্ধ না হলে আর্থিক খাতে শৃংখলা ফেরানো সম্ভব না বলেও মন্তব্য করেন তিনি।"
