Response to the pandemic of COVID-19 by Rotary Club of Sonargaon Dhaka (RCSD)

The COVID-19 pandemic marks an unprecedented time in modern history that will require the best of humanity to overcome. The new coronavirus has taken thousands of lives and spread to nearly every country in the world and has now reached Bangladesh.

During the lockdown beginning on 18 March 2020 in order to cease the deadly spread of Covid 19 in Bangladesh, RCSD decided to help the most effected daily wage earners in the unavoidable shut down in Bangladesh.

With a nationwide holiday announced for all private and public enterprises till the 4th of April, the country is unofficially in a lock-down state. The demographic who are most affected by this are the day laborers. People who live hand-to-mouth and have no source of income at this trying time.

RCSD is targeting to help a very small segment of this demographic: rickshaw pullers, underprivileged and vulnerable community living in Slums in Dhaka.

Some more than 200 families received assistance since 28 March, 2020 during the lockdown in slums of Mirpur, Dhaka Bangladesh.

The relief team is led by Rtn. Kazi Amdad with assistance/coordination of President Zakia and team with funding support from fellow members of RCSD.

The relief packet included rice, lentils, oil together with soap and detergent from different outlet close to their home.

RCSD ensure maintaining social distance as relief was distributed among deprived and sufferer working class. Recipients were lined up in one by one not in a crowd.

Relief was given on 28 March, 31 March and on 2 April 2020.

This assistance is expected to continue till funds available.
