[In Focus] — Marek Wolfryd

These works examine the Mexican phenomenon of design appropriation during the Twentieth Century, when manufacturers in Mexico freely adapted and reinterpreted European and American furniture designs. During this period, Mexican producers created their own versions of international design icons. Some Space Age era (1970s) examples of this furniture are
Milo Baughman’s nesting tables and Giotto Stoppino’s Cobra Chair which were transformed into locally produced variants such as the “Silla Z” by Muebles K2. Rather than exact replicas, these Mexican interpretations incorporated local manufacturing techniques, resulting in distinctive “bootleg” designs that reflected both international influences without resulting in copyright infringement.

The project explores this rich tradition of adaptation and reinterpretation, showcasing how Mexican
manufacturers navigated between inspiration and innovation, creating pieces that became part of Mexico’s unique design heritage while maintaining a dialogue with global design movements.

These new contemporary works revisit and continue
this practice, honoring the ingenuity and. resourcefulness of Mexican design production from this era.

New works by Samantha McCurdy have arrived at the gallery.

McCurdy is based in Los Angeles, originally from Philadelphia, a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her sculptural paintings replace canvas with a thin stretchable fabric, drawn over woodwork that hides spherical forms underneath, bulging out beyond the frame.

She has exhibited in Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Mexico City, Paris and now Antwerp...
