A quick but dramatic change for this pair! These cute MCM end tables belong to my best friend - she wanted them to “opposite match” another little table I refinished back for her back in July (last photo) to complete her living room makeover. Same paint colour, same wood stain, but reversed. I took care in sealing the teak veneer before painting it so if in the future someone wants to refinish them back to their original state, it’ll be an easy process. Pretty sure it won’t be me though - she loves how they look now and so do I! 😂

The Krug Brothers & Co. originated in Chesley, Ontario in 1886. The company was known for its high end, high quality, solid wood furniture right up until they closed their doors in 1987. Their most iconic design style ran from the 1950s through 1970s, commonly known as the mid century modern era. The clean, contemporary lines of this classic design style have stood the test of time, and this beautiful piece is no exception.

Solid elm construction, completely refinished and fully sealed for durability and continuous use for another 75+ years.
Not only is this piece heirloom quality in terms of construction and design, it is a piece of Canadian furniture history.

This little table came in with great bones but a bit tired from decades of good service. My client (who happens to be my best friend…she keeps me busy with fun projects 🙌🏻), originally wanted this table to have a dark top and a light, natural base for contrast. The top is solid walnut…a glorious wood to work with…and the base is a hodgepodge of maple pieces. When I stripped the wood down to that very light colour, I didn’t love the high contrast and the patchwork of maple pieces were pretty obvious, so we switched to trying a light brown stain instead. Even with careful sanding and the use of wood conditioner, the patchy, uneven mix of the different pieces of spliced together maple were too loud to be camouflaged without killing it with toner, which would just make the whole table one colour anyway…not the vibe.
After two rounds of stripping and sanding to see if the mid brown stain colour could work…it didn’t. These vintage pieces always make me work for it!! 😅
We made the decision in the end to paint it a gorgeous sage green and now it looks absolutely stunning, as if it was meant to be!
