The Lake House Gallery Artist Feature:
Abby Wynia
Based in Hamilton, Ontario, Abby’s work in woodburning and watercolour is inspired by fish, plants and the freshwater ecosystems across Canada.
With a background in aquatic ecology, Abby spent years studying freshwater ecosystems before turning to art as another way to explore and share her observations.
She draws heavily on that background, especially her love of getting to know the species she works with and examining the details that make them unique.
Fish, along with the plants and habitats that surround them, have always been a particular focus of her work.
She enjoys taking species that are normally overlooked and giving them a chance to be appreciated.
Her woodburnings combine detailed fish and botanical representations with the natural character of live-edge wood.
Her watercolour paintings explore the same freshwater subjects in a different, more illustrative way.

An autumn inspired centrepiece can be as simple as a few thoughtfully collected elements. Here, a candle and candle holder are surrounded by Ontario apples and a few gathered branches. It’s placed on a wooden slab, with cinnamon sticks tucked in here and there, it feels warm, natural and just right for the first days of fall.

Three Generation Salsa
A couple of years ago, my niece, my sister, my mom and I spent an afternoon together making salsa. We chopped peppers, onions and garlic while tomatoes simmered away on the stove, sharing stories and plenty of laughter as we worked.
The salsa was delicious, but it was the time spent together that made the afternoon so memorable. With three generations gathered in the kitchen, we affectionately named our recipe “Three Generation Salsa.”
We thought we’d share it with you again. We thought you’d enjoy the recipe and maybe you’ll make it with your family or friends too.

Three Generation Salsa
Makes about 11 cups
• 1 jalapeno pepper
• 8 cups chopped and peeled tomatoes (we used Roma)
• 2 cups chopped onions (we used one red and one Spanish)
• 5 cups chopped peppers (we used red, yellow & orange)
• 2 cups apple cider vinegar
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 can tomato paste (5.5 fl oz)
• 2 tbsp sugar
• 1 tbsp salt
• 2 tsp paprika
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Combine all ingredients and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour or until thickened, stirring often.
Fill into sterilized jars.

Quilts 09/01/2026

As we head into September we’re starting to think about layering. A cosy throw on your favourite chair, a soft rug at your feet, a snuggly quilt on the foot of your bed.
Anyone else starting to feel that little shift toward cosy?

Quilts It’s like that cozy quilt at Grandma and Grandpas’ cottage. The one that got better with a bit of sun fading from the porch and even better with a bit of age. We’ve had the same quilts for over ten years, they were on our day bed on our front porch and now they are in our guest bedrooms. Their...

We did a botanical printing workshop Wave Fibre Mill featuring Everwilde. It’s a process where you hammer whole flowers, petals and leaves onto organic cotton bandanas. Once stamped, you remove the plants to reveal the natural dyes. It’s a creative way to preserve their colour and shape for years to come. A way to preserve the beauty of the season and memories of the moment.
We crafted these scarves and started thinking how wonderful it would be to imagine a special pillow cover, table runner or fabric wrap.
Have you ever tried this?

The Lake House Gallery
Artist Feature: Peter Craik
Based in Baysville, Ontario, Peter has developed a sharp eye for the natural world in his 50-year career as a ski instructor and builder.
His interest in photography began years ago with a memorable visit to Nepal. It has continued to grow with trips through Algonquin Park, Wolfe Island, Sable Island and Norway observing and photographing the unique fauna, flora and landscape of each place.
A special experience for Peter was documenting the Women’s World Cup Skiing at Mont Tremblant in 2026.
Peter looks forward to retirement offering him a new chapter, with more time to focus on new subjects.
