Pysanky is the ancient art of Batik dying eggs. Beeswax is applied to the egg and the egg is then dipped into dye. This art dates back to 5000-3000 BC.
Pysanky is the art of using beeswax and dye to create a written story on an egg shell. Of course the art form has evolved over time and changed. I am offering a free etching workshop end of May ( details to follow ). You will have to bring an egg that you want to etch. For example. I will be etching a waxed emu egg using a product called Acid Magic ( not a kick back from the 60's haha) Let me know if you are interested. Workshop should be about 1 hour long depending on how many show up and how much chatting we do! :) You are also more then welcome to come and see how it's done if you are unsure about what to etch. I am in Calgary and found an excellent source for white farm chicken eggs- a young farm boy who takes care of the chickens and get to sell the extras. He charges $5 per doz and I've taught him how to pick through for the best pysanky ones and I have had fantastic luck. He can meet you in Airdrie, let me know if you'd like his contact info.
