All this because of… SLUG GOO?! 🐌😂

My big garage door was looking faded, chalky and covered in slug trails, so I decided it was time for a fresh coat of paint.

Easy one-day project, right? WRONG. 🙃

Three days of cleaning, sanding, taping, spraying, filling dents, dodging wasps and wiping slugs off freshly painted surfaces later… I finally had that smooth, almost factory-like finish I was after!

There was just one little problem: **I realized I didn't even like the colour anymore.** 😂

And that’s how painting one garage door turned into a much bigger exterior refresh before winter.

Apparently, if you give Cheryl a freshly painted garage door, she’s going to want to repaint the whole front of her house! 🏡

This little side garage door was becoming quite the eyesore! 😬

Flaking paint, rust spots, dents and chips… it was definitely ready for some attention.

I colour-matched the original caramel taupe, scraped away the loose paint, sanded, primed the exposed metal, filled the dents and sprayed on a fresh finish. I even replaced the chipped bottom weather seal!

It took several rounds of sanding, filling and painting, but that smooth, refreshed finish was worth the work. 🙌

One little door checked off the list… but I’m giving the exterior of our house a much-needed refresh before winter, and this is just the beginning! 🏡

✨ **SHE’S READY FOR HER NEXT CHAPTER!** ✨

This Victorian bird’s-eye maple dresser was quite the rescue, but I couldn’t let that beautiful wood go to waste. ❤️

After four weeks of cleaning, repairs, problem-solving and refinishing, she’s finally ready for a new home!

I worked hard to preserve the natural maple, bring out its beautiful grain and restore the character of the ornate mirror and original details. And that stubborn black stain on the top? Let’s just say I learned a very useful trick along the way! 😉

She’s now available for $595 CAD.

Not all furniture can be saved… but I had to try! ❤️

This Victorian-style bird’s-eye maple dresser was left outside all summer. The drawers were stuck, the wood was badly weather-damaged, parts were coming apart, and I had no idea what I'd find under the paint.

What followed was four weeks of cleaning, repairs, sanding, problem-solving, and trying just about everything I could think of to save that beautiful original maple.

At one point, I was convinced the black stain on the top would never come out. Then a fellow refinisher suggested something I hadn't even considered… and it changed the whole project!

This was a challenging rescue, but I'm so glad I gave her a chance.

I was losing sleep over this one. 😂
After hours of stripping, sanding, and trying to figure out how to fix the black stains on this dresser top, I was seriously considering my options.
Then a fellow furniture refinisher messaged me with THIS tip: have you tried flipping it over? 🤦‍♀️
Well… no. No, I had not. And it worked!
Sometimes the best restoration tricks come from people who’ve been there before. ❤️
Sharing this in case another refinisher is lying awake at night trying to solve the same problem. You’re welcome! 😂

My mom and I spotted this chair sitting on the side of the road during one of our morning bike rides, and of course… I couldn't leave it behind. 😂
When I got it home, I realized it was in a little rougher shape than it first appeared. The finish was failing, there were cracks and imperfections to repair, and once I stripped it down, I discovered it was made from three different woods.
But I loved the simple lines of the chair and knew it had potential.
After a lot of sanding, some repairs, stain, touch-ups, a new water-based topcoat and fresh fabric, this little roadside rescue got a whole new life.
I originally planned to sell it… but I ended up loving it too much. So now it has a new home at my daughter's desk. 🤍

I gave this solid maple three-drawer dresser a complete refresh, bringing out the beautiful natural wood grain and giving it a soft, warm, low-sheen finish.
Finished with antique brass ring pulls and cleaned-up original casters, she has that classic vintage shape with a fresh, natural look that would be beautiful in a nursery, child’s room, bedroom or even as a smaller dresser in an entry or guest room.
And after all the drawer repairs, I’m very happy to say that all three drawers now glide smoothly. 🙌

My neighbour gave me this vintage dresser that had belonged to her grandmother, and I knew I wanted to give it a new life. ❤️

It had spent years in a basement and needed quite a bit of TLC — mould and mildew, a loose frame, swollen drawers, worn-out drawer guides, a missing mirror and a very orange finish!

What I thought would be a fairly straightforward refinish turned into about three hours of structural repairs before I could even start sanding.

Dad helped me get the frame back together, we worked on getting the swollen drawers fitting again, and I rebuilt the worn drawer guides and filled the deep grooves with epoxy.
Once those drawers were finally moving smoothly, I could get on with the fun part!

I stripped and sanded the solid maple, moved the top back to close the gap left by the missing mirror, and tried Fusion Stain & Finishing Oil in Light Oak for the first time. I wanted to replace the honey-orange look with something softer, more neutral and low-sheen while still letting the maple shine through.

A little work on the rusty casters, some shellac inside to help with the lingering odour, new antique brass hardware… and she finally came together.

This one definitely took more work than I expected, but I think she was worth saving. ❤️

A little more of the story behind this chair… ❤️
I considered this one a restoration from the beginning. But after sharing the videos, I was reminded just how passionate antique lovers are about patina — and I completely understand why.
Some people believe an antique should be left exactly as it was found, preserving every mark, scratch and layer of finish. And honestly, I now think much more carefully before I reach for the st****er or sandpaper. There are pieces where preserving the original surface is absolutely the right choice.
For this chair, though, I made a different decision.
This was a $25 Marketplace find with a broken and splitting arm, lifting veneer, missing sections, cracking and flaking finish, along with some pretty significant burns, scratches and carvings.
Rather than leave it in that condition, I chose to repair the damage, bring the wood back to life and make it usable again.
I didn’t want to erase its history. I wanted to preserve the chair itself while camouflaging the damage that had accumulated over its lifetime.
And that’s probably my favourite part of this piece — imagining what that lifetime might have looked like.
Was it someone’s captain’s chair?
A schoolhouse chair?
Did it sit in a farmhouse kitchen for decades?
Was the carved “H” someone’s initials?
Or maybe it eventually became a statement piece in someone’s home.
I’ll never know. And I kind of love that. ❤️
This restoration took me about six hours, and it taught me a LOT of new techniques.

So… was the colour REALLY the problem? 👀
Well… I decided to test the theory. 😂

These tables had been sitting for sale for several weeks. I started at $295, dropped them to $250, and still… crickets. 🦗

And I was getting quite a few comments about the original colour.

The funny thing is… I actually still liked the original version! 😂 But I thought, okay — maybe the colour really is what’s holding these back.

So I decided to give them another chance.

I repainted the bases in Fusion Mineral Paint Everett(slightly darkened) and warmed up the tops with Early American stain. Same tables. Same beautiful details. Completely different feel.

And honestly? I LOVE how warm and earthy they look now. 🤎💚

Now comes the real test…

Will they sell this time? 👀
