Established in 1997, the garden is a series of thirty-one raised beds located on the pipeline right-of-way at approximately 86 street and 36A Avenue, adjacent to the Keegano Housing Co-operative in Edmonton, AB. In keeping with the intent of the original grant proposal, the Richfield Community Garden continues to be a gathering point for the community—a place where neighbours meet, share stories, and garden together.

Carrots and succession planting.
We often complain about the short growing season here in Alberta but I’m of the mind that we don’t take advantage of what growing time we do have.
For decades, I have fall planted cool crops in Zones 2b to 4a. Currently in 4a in Red Deer. I can start enjoying greens, baby carrots and beets by mid to late April depending on the year.
Carrots sown in October make fabulous salad greens with a little root in the early spring. Same with beets. As they get bigger you get more for your buck.
I plant every few weeks from mid-April until late August. I usually leave a few from each planting to grow bigger. There’s nothing left from May and June’s planting this year, however. They were extra tasty I guess! 😄 Germination was also more challenging with the heat this year. My favorite are baby carrots to eat fresh.
There are still quite a few from July and August’s plantings to enjoy fresh from the garden for a few more weeks. Then I’ll pull and store what’s left.
