As some of you may know, the Good Hope Hall has been shut down due to structural issues. Specifically, the addition (which includes the kitchen, second hall and bathroom) was built improperly and the foundation underneath it is crumbling and that portion of the building is sagging. The GH executive hired an engineer and he inspected the hall this week. He has come to the same conclusion that the addition is unsafe. However, he had indicated that the structure of the original building is in fair shape and that, with some repairs to the roof structure and foundation, the building could still be good for another 15 to 20 years.
The executive needs some direction before we take any further action. There are three options for the future of Good Hope Hall:
1. Tear down the addition and repair the original building
2. Demolish the entire structure and build a new facility
3. Demolish the entire structure and not built anything.
Therefore, our questions to you are –
1. Is there community support to push for this original school building to be saved?
2. Is expending money on the hall worth it?
3. If the hall were to be repaired/replaced – what do you see it being used for?
The costs of repairs would be high, and although there is some money in the Good Hope account, we would have to depend on grants, fund raising and support of the County.
If there is no support from the community, from former students, from former hall members – then the most likely option would be #3. What are your responses to these questions?
Please pass on this request to family members, former students and residents. Anyone who has been associated with Good Hope has a say in its future. We look forward to hearing from you.
