A while ago we posted a short teaser about this mass timber library project in Saskatoon, as we just had completed the DfMA for it.
Now, some time has past, material has arrived on site and the the installer is making great progress. We have seen already some pictures from the install on site and it sounds like, they will be topping out soon.
We thought this might be a good time to show this project off again with a install animation of the mass timber components.
This was a great project to be part off and it's always rewarding when you see pictures from on site with the components getting installed.
We just completed the DfMA for an exciting Mass Timber project.
More to come, stay tuned.
We had the opportunity to do the DfMA on a unique timberframe structure for a winery with a restaurant in California.
The design was very contemporary with double chord trusses, steel elements and mono pitch roofs. The roofs were inverted as well which made the design even more unique.
The timberframe was manufactured and supplied by Hamill Creek Timber Homes.
Unfortunately we don't have any site pictures of this stunning timberframe but the install went great without any hick-ups which speaks for itself.
With this render we wanted to show case this beautiful frame.
Not every building is square with an a-frame or mono pitched roof.
It's always great to work on a project with a more complex shape or angles. But as soon the building geometry is more unique, so do the connections and details get as well.
On those kind of project we have to think a little bit more about the constructability and install sequence to avoid any issues during the er****on of the structure.
A while ago, we were hired to work out the design of timberframe decagon for Canadian Timberframes Ltd. This was a very interesting and fun project to work on. With a huge king post in the center, we called it the pencil post (as it has the shape of a pencil) which was made out of 4 individual members. The braces were arched glulam beams and the outer tension ring was connected with large, custom steel straps.
The pictures and this render do no justice to the scale, this was quite bigger than it looks. With a free span of over 56 feet (17 meters) this was quite impressive.
And with the help from Fire Tower Engineered Timber, the details
were actually pretty simple and repetitive ๐.
The biggest reward for us is always getting pictures from a happy
client of the finished structure after the successful install.

LIGNUM DESIGN Mass Timber - Timberframe Design & Consulting
We had the pleasure working on the plans for a very special design with rammed earth walls. This is a very unique building method and this was the first time we had been involved in a project using rammed earth walls.
The project coming along very nicely. The walls have been build already, roofs, windows and doors are installed. This is getting close to completion. I'm very impressed how this turned out, the pattern and colors of the rammed earth walls are stunning.
With this render we wanted to showcase this cool project and design.
Big shout out to team from Zimmerman Construction, they do an amazing job as always. We were glad to the plans for them.
If you want to find out more about this, don't hesitate to reach out to Zimmerman Construction. You probably have seen their posts on this project already.

Blue skies, warm tones and one dream home taking shape.
This beautiful rammed earth build is all coming together piece by piece.
Incredible windows, local Timbers and so much natural light.
We canโt wait to finish it up, so after many years of dreaming and planning our amazing clients can move in.
Huge thanks to crew members Levi and Mitch, who have tirelessly worked through the many challenging aspects of this unique build.
Choosing the right connection is key, it's all in the detail.
When doing the the DfMA on a timberframe or Mass Timber project, we as designers/detailers have to decide sometimes between a lot of different connection options to make sure it fits the project perfectly.
This depends on a lot of factors, for example:
-the loading and forces on the connection
-depending where the connection is in the project for easy install
-shop or CNC machine capability
-installers or contractors preference
-install sequence
-price
-availability, for example supply chain issues
-exposure to weather
-can the connection be visible or does it needs to be concealed
-fire rating
................................ and so on.
All of the above play a big role when we model the connections in the 3D timber model.
This short animation is just a simple connection detail but shows a few different options.
This is the final Render of the Lakeland College project were we posted a teaser last week. On this project we did the DfMA for the Mass Timber Scope. With all the coordination for the interface between mass timber to concrete and mass timber to structural steel structure.
This was a great team effort by the mass timber supplier, engineers, architect , contractor and steel supplier.
The Mass timber components are already manufactured and are on their way to the site. Looking forward to see some install pictures.
