🇨🇦 Thinking about ordering custom furniture from the United States? Make sure you know the landed cost not just the price on the website.
As of September 8, 2026, Canada has imposed a 50% counter-tariff on certain U.S.-origin wooden furniture entering Canada.
That can change the math very quickly.
For example, a U.S.-origin wooden table with a value for duty of $5,000 CAD could potentially face:
• $2,500 in Canadian surtax
• GST/HST calculated on the value including the surtax
• Cross-border freight
• Customs brokerage or clearance charges
• Currency conversion if the original price is in U.S. dollars
In Ontario, that hypothetical $5,000 table could reach roughly $8,475 after the 50% surtax and HST alone before cross-border shipping or brokerage fees.
Of course, the exact amount depends on where the furniture was actually manufactured, its customs classification and how it enters Canada. But it is something Canadian buyers should be asking about before placing an order.
And there is another side to the decision that matters to us.
When you commission furniture from a Canadian craftsman, you're not simply supporting one Canadian business.
Your purchase helps support a chain of businesses here at home.
🇨🇦 Canadian hardwood suppliers and sawmills
🇨🇦 Canadian finishing and hardware suppliers
🇨🇦 Local machining and fabrication businesses
🇨🇦 Canadian transportation and delivery companies
🇨🇦 The skilled tradespeople who build the piece
🇨🇦 And the communities where those businesses employ people and spend their own money
That is the part of Made in Canada that is sometimes overlooked.
A table built here doesn't support just the person who builds it. The money moves through an entire network of Canadian businesses before that table ever reaches your home.
At Western Pride Woodworks, our custom tables are individually built in Ontario using Canadian hardwoods including black walnut, maple, ash, cherry and oak.
We believe Canadian buyers shouldn't have to choose between exceptional craftsmanship and supporting businesses here at home.
Sometimes buying Canadian isn't simply about where something was made.
