Every receipt this Black Friday ends up back where it started: the price on the tag.

From now until Tuesday, December 1, every regular-priced mattress gets a discount equal to the 13% HST, in all seven of our stores and online. Every brand is in except Tempur-Pedic.

Here's what that means at the till. HST is still charged, as the law requires, so this is a discount, not a tax-free sale. The discount just cancels it out. Read the tag on the mattress you like: with tax in, you won't pay more than that.

A few things to know before you come in:

There's no code. The register takes it off each qualifying mattress by itself, and online checkout does the same.
It doesn't apply to clearance, open bag, or mattresses already on sale or price-matched. A price match and this discount don't combine, so you get one or the other.
It's one mattress offer per sale, so it's this or a free base offer, not both.
The 20% off accessories with a mattress still applies on top.
Black Friday itself (November 27) and the last two days get busy. If you can, come earlier in the week and lie on a few. Nobody here earns commission, so take as long as you like. Full details are in the first comment.

From the aisle, these two look like they have nothing in common. Different brands, and one is memory foam while the other has coils. Both are sold as Firm, and on our Comfort IQ scale both score an 8 out of 10.

That's the label getting it right, and it doesn't always. Firmness words come from the brands, and every brand draws its own line. Across the mattresses we carry, the ones with "Firm" in the name score anywhere from 6 to 10 out of 10. Even the in-between labels blur: one mattress sold as Medium Firm scores a 4, a little softer than one sold as Plush, which scores a 5.

So we don't lean on the label. Our product pages show a Comfort IQ firmness number for each mattress we've scored, on one scale across brands, built from spec review, standardised testing and hands-on evaluation by our team. Tap "Read Full Comfort Analysis" and you'll also see how it does on pressure relief, cooling, motion isolation and more.

The number is a starting point. Your weight, your sleep position and whether you share the bed all change how a 6 or a 7 actually feels.

Next time you're comparing two mattresses, skip the names and compare the numbers. Then come lie on both at any of our seven stores. Nobody on our floor earns commission, so we'll tell you straight which number suits the way you sleep.

One of them is on his second roll of tape. The other one checked from the doorway.

If you're thinking about going from a Twin to a King, here's the number that matters: a Twin is 39 inches wide and a King is 76. That's nearly double, and 5 inches longer too. And those extra inches don't come out of the bed, they come out of the floor around it. The walk past the dresser, the space beside the nightstand, the closet door that used to open all the way.

The old way to check is painter's tape on the floor, and it still works. There's also a faster way. On your phone, open a mattress on our website that has a 3D view, choose your size, and tap "View in your Space." Point the camera at your bedroom floor and the mattress appears at full size, right where it would go. Walk around it. Open the drawers. Sit on the edge of where it would be.

Two things to know: it shows the mattress on its own, so allow a little extra for a frame or headboard. And try not to pinch the screen, since that changes the size.

It works on iPhone and most newer Android phones. Once you know what fits, come lie on a few at any of our seven stores. Nobody on our floor earns commission, so if the bigger bed isn't worth the squeeze, we'll say so.

Laundry day. The sheets are off, the mattress is bare, and there it is: the tag.

Most of us have stood over it at least once with a pair of scissors, wondering. Here's the practical case for putting them down.

That little white label is the one place your mattress's model, materials and date of manufacture are all written down. If you ever need to make a warranty claim, it's one of the first things that gets checked. On our own NM mattresses, a missing law tag can void the warranty. Other brands set their own terms, so it's worth checking yours.

If it really bothers you, it doesn't have to dangle. Tuck it back under the fitted sheet when you remake the bed.

And while the sheets are off anyway, take a photo of the tag and your receipt. Ten seconds, and any future claim gets a lot easier.

If you're shopping for a new mattress, bring that photo in. It tells us exactly what you're sleeping on now, which makes it much easier to find what you actually need.

If you're reading this in bed at 2am, you're in good company.

One in four Canadian adults say they have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep most or all of the time. That's from Statistics Canada. And about two-thirds of us are on a screen in the half hour before we drift off, which doesn't help.

So it's natural that the middle of the night is when a lot of people decide the mattress is the problem and start shopping for a new one.

Sometimes they're right. Sometimes it's the room, the pillow, or the day they had. The hard part is telling which from inside the problem at 2am.

Here's a free way to find out. For the next few mornings, jot down where you woke up sore and when. Lower back, shoulder, hip, too hot, too many wake-ups. It takes ten seconds.

Bring that note in. Our sleep consultants aren't on commission, so they'll tell you honestly if it points to the mattress or to something cheaper to fix. Then lie on a few, in daylight, before you decide.

Freshly rolled out, and already a different bed.

After every purchase we ask how the firmness turned out. 946 people have answered this year, and 197 told us their mattress felt firmer than they expected. That's about one in five.

It isn't random, either. Under 130 lbs, 14% said firmer. Between 130 and 230, 21%. Over 230, 31%. The heavier you are, the more you press straight through the comfort layer on top and feel the firm support core underneath.

Which usually means the support is doing exactly its job. The layer on top is just thinner than your body needed, and that part is fixable without replacing anything. A two-and-a-half-inch gel memory foam topper adds that layer back. Ours comes in every size from single to king, and the cover comes off and goes in the wash.

What it won't do is rescue a mattress that's sagging or past ten years. That's a different conversation.

A free test for tonight: lie on your side for a minute. Shoulder and hip pressing into the bed while your waist still feels held? The support's fine. It's the top layer.

Come feel one on a mattress, and ask us straight. Nobody here earns commission.

The towels are doing pillow work. Everyone who sleeps on their side works this out eventually, and almost nobody works out why.

Side sleeping lifts your head 10 to 15 centimetres higher off the mattress than lying on your back does. That distance is your shoulder, and it isn't going anywhere. So a pillow that sits perfectly when you're flat on your back leaves your neck folding downward all night the moment you roll over.

What people do about it is improvise. A folded towel. A book under the pillow. A hand wedged underneath — that one's so common most people have stopped noticing they do it. All three are the same fix: you're not short of a pillow, you're short of about four inches.

We carry 46 pillow styles. Ten are built for side sleeping, from $26 to $285, and two of those have a physical cut-out for the shoulder to drop into — rare enough that almost nothing else on a Canadian retail floor has it.

The test costs nothing. Lie on your side and have someone look at you head-on. Head tilting down toward the mattress, the pillow's too low. Chin tucked toward your chest, too high. Ear, shoulder and hip in one straight line is the whole target.

Come in and squish a few. Nobody here works on commission, so if someone tells you the $26 one is right for you, that's just the answer.

One side thrown back, one side still covered. Nearly half our customers sleep like this.

We ask everyone after they buy: do you tend to sleep hot? 1,169 people have answered this year. 558 said yes. That's 47.7%, which is not a niche, it's nearly half.

And it's worse in a shared bed. Sleeping alone it's 42%. Sharing it, 52%. Two bodies, one duvet, and one of you is always wrong about the temperature.

A cooling mattress works on the surface you lie on. The duvet, the sheet and the person beside you are the rest of it, and none of those is the mattress. Worth sorting the cheap layers before you replace the expensive one.

Come tell us which one of you runs hot. It changes the recommendation more than people expect.

All six of these fit the same bed. They're 2 to 9 inches thick.

We stock 113 box springs across those six heights. Two are most of it: 41 at five inches and 35 at nine. Four inches apart.

Most people spend three weeks choosing a mattress and about four seconds on the thing underneath it. Which matters more than it sounds, because height is the only part of a bed you deal with while you're awake — getting in, getting out, sitting on the edge to put your socks on.

Ten-second test: sit on the edge of yours. Feet dangling means it's high for you. Knees riding above your hips means it's low. There's no correct number, it depends how tall you are. Ask next time you're in — one question, and it's the difference between sitting down onto your bed and climbing up into it.
