70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Night of the Murdered Soviet Yiddish Writers

This event honours through poetry and music some of the Soviet Union's most important Yiddish writers, murdered 70 years ago.

On August 12, 1952 - 70 years ago - Peretz Markish, Itsik Fefer, Dovid Hofshteyn and many other Yiddish writers of their generation were executed in a Soviet prison, silencing some of the most vibrant and intelligent voices of the Yiddish world. This event honours the memory of these murdered writers by telling their stories through a moving performance of poetry and music.

Participants include Pinchas Blitt, Raizel Fishman Candib, Esther Frank, Lazer Lederhendler, Bronna Levy, Henri Oppenheim, Janie Respitz, Sebastian Schulman and Rivka Augenfeld.

The Ukrainian-Jewish Dialogue of Montreal (UJDM) condemns Russia’s unprovoked war against the
peaceful, sovereign state of Ukraine and its people.

Mr. Putin’s vile assertions that he wishes to “denazify” Ukraine to prevent atrocities are baseless
excuses to invade a peaceful, democratic state and to murder innocent people. His outrageous lies are
shameful ploys to enable his genocidal agenda in Ukraine, to hide his war crimes, and to demonize
Ukrainians. His false allegations also diminish, traumatize, and threaten Holodomor and Holocaust
survivors.

It is no accident that approximately 200,000 Jews live in Ukraine today, or that its inspiring, heroic
president is a Jewish descendent of Holocaust survivors. Ukraine is building a modern nation where
diverse ethnicities, religions, races, and cultures can co-exist in peace.

UJDM was co-founded in the mid-1980s by Dr. Victor Goldbloom and Professor Roman Serbyn at a time
when Ukrainian and Jewish communities in Canada were frequently estranged. We began to build
positive relationships which have grown to include mutual admiration, respect, and support for one
another. In its modest way, our friendship circle exemplifies what has been done on larger scales in
Canada and in Ukraine.

We, the members of UJDM, stand together in unity, in friendship, and in solidarity with our communities
in Canada and Ukraine. We are heartened by the support of our governments, institutions, and fellow
citizens. We urge all people everywhere to continue to stand up, to speak out, and to act in defence of
Ukraine’s democracy.
