Lucy Chapman, 2nd generation cabinetmaker
When Lucy was just little, her mum knew she could find her in the woods, hanging out in a hollow she had placed some boards over! Before she was 12 she had built her first structure with a floor, four walls, a door, a roof and even a window. In 1985, at age 20, Lucy began her career as a full time carpenter. A more thoughtful post will come about this another day, but I couldn’t let the end of this day pass without raising a glass of beer. Why? I completed the last installation of my professional career today. yup! 39 years as a woman carpenter and cabinetmaker; pushing nails uphill all the way!

Handy ottawa friends: sadly, last week, my trusty old, portable tablesaw just refused to go. Last time I had it, it was fine, this time nothing. I’ve done the very minimal basics that I can figure out how to do such as check the electrical connections within the switch. It could be a switch itself, but I don’t know how to test it. I am so close to retirement that I really don’t want to buy a new one. Plus the new ones are much heavier and hurt my back to schlep around. Does anyone feel like a project and think they can maybe make this go? It doesn’t make sense to spend more than about 60 bucks having it fixed and I doubt anyone in the shop would look at it for That. Hoping to keep it out of the landfill and in-service for a couple more years.

This charming home had a gorgeous fireplace but it was standing all alone just begging for company. Flanking units feature solid birch tops and a new birch mantle to match the heritage floors.
