Frameless mirrors, floating shelf, and faucet covers - black walnut

One of my most nerve-wracking projects, despite the relatively simple build. The stone slabs behind the mirror run from floor to ceiling, which meant that any damage to the stone would warrant the replacement of the entire slab... which meant pulling out all the cabinetry, countertops, etc. In fact, the reason for this project was to cover up a mistake made by another trade. I couldn't risk cracking the stone with fasteners, so I had to rely on using nothing but PL adhesive to hold everything up. It's a common method for installing mirrors, but I can't help but be paranoid that everything will fall off the next day 😰

In the end, it worked out beautifully. The use of radiuses on all the corners, as well as roundovers on all the edges, really made the solid walnut soft to the touch. The natural lacquer finish really brought out the warmth of walnut, which greatly complements the stone backing as well.

No filler, no epoxy. Just good ol' wood on wood action 😉

Generally, I like to leave knots alone (or cut around it), but this one couldn't be avoided, and it had a hole in it. Filler looks cheap, and epoxy looks out of place. Patching it took a bit more effort, but I think it produced the best result. I also see it as the mark of craftsperson who cares.

What do y'all think? What would you do?

Charcuterie boards - maple, walnut, and mahogany.

I made a batch of these boards with the intent to sell. However, I procrastinated so long that I've given most of these away as gifts by now (and sold none). I think I have maybe three left from my original batch of more than twenty. If you've been a client of mine, chances are you have one of these boards 😉

I liked making these boards, and I think they turned out really nice. But at the end of the day, I don't think projects like these are profitable. Maybe the real profit is the friends we made along the way 💖

Dog kennel / crate cabinet - Solid maple and white veneer-core (plywood) melamine.

This cabinet was designed to accommodate a medium to large dog. The client wanted a place to put their dog food and medicines as well, hence the open shelf on the right.

The doors are made of solid maple and aluminum. I incorporated 270-degree hinges into the design so that the doors are able to fold flat against the gable when in the open position. This way, the dog is able to free roam in/out of the kennel without the door occupying the walkway. I've chosen to inlay the hinges as well to achieve a clean and flush aesthetic.

I chose to use white melamine for the carcass for durability. The client originally wanted a white painted finish, but having dogs myself, I know that a painted finish will not hold up to dog claws. I went with a veneer core as well (instead of particle core) so that in the event of spills, the cabinet won't simply swell up and crumble.

The dimensions were designed to accommodate off-the-shelf accessories such as trays and beds. The wheels are not part of the design (they're just for transport), though I did install leveling feet to prevent any wobble.

Shoe rack bench - made from Sapele, and a mix of random scraps 😀

It's hard to capture in camera, but I love how much depth the sapele grain has. It also shimmers in the sunlight. No stains were used - just a few coats of lacquer.

I try to create something new every time I want to use up my scraps. In this instance, I wanted to replace my old cheap plastic shoe rack with something sturdy that I can sit on. The only new material I had to buy were the aluminum tubes. The result is a super sturdy bench that can hold two adults and 8 pairs of shoes. A great way to use up my scraps while being super useful 👌

Hardwood clipboards - Each clipboard measures around 3/8" thick. Super hard, super sturdy. Dominate your meetings. Look smug on the job site. Beat your competitors and their flimsy cardboard clipboards. Holds your documents and your marriage together.

Composed of a mix of cherry, walnut, oak, purpleheart, maple, and mahogany AKA whatever extra wood I had laying around. All natural colors with no stains used. Clear finish. If you don't finish first, you're last.

Media Rack - Cherry and Purpleheart

This was definitely the heaviest shelf (or, in this case, media rack) that I've ever built. 3" thick cherry shelves, and 3" thick purpleheart legs. Each shelf measures roughly 20" x 40". Solid wood throughout. This thing is HEAVY. The client intends on using it to store his audio equipment. I really love how all the grain and colours pop. No stains were used - just a clear lacquer finish.

Island extension cabinet - baltic birch with a solid maple top.
The existing seating area for this island was underutilized, and the client wanted more storage space in lieu of seating. This cabinet extends into the footwell, adding an additional 16 inches (depth) of storage space and 10 inches (depth) of counter space.
