The Politics of Evidence Working Group is a coalition of over 40 academics, scientists, and activists. We formed in 2014 to challenge the fraught politics of evidence in Canada today, troubling the obstacles that interfere with our “right to know” about the health and wellbeing of our bodies, communities, and environments. We are concerned with the current Canadian government’s “war on science,” a

This week the City of Toronto launched a new round of pesticide treatments in High Park with Garlon RTU, a known toxin. Stand with the Indigenous Land Stewardship Circle and their call for a ban on pesticides on these ancient and sacred lands. Call the number below to let them know how you feel about toxic chemicals in Toronto's parks. Learn more about chemical-free land management and Indigenous stewardship in Toronto at http://indigenousstewardshipTO.wordpress.com

Garlon RTU, a toxic pesticide, is being used right now across High Park (December through to March) in effort to eradicate nonnative plants. These are sacred Lands. Pesticides poison our sacred relationship to Land and compound the dispossession of Indigenous peoples. The ILSC is demanding the city ban all pesticide use in High Park. ***Indigenous Stewardship is climate action and harm reduction*** Read our letter. And call the number below to demand the end to chemical management in High Park and beyond.

POE supports the Indigenous Land Stewardship Circle. Check out their letter to the City of Toronto to demand a ban on pesticides in High Park. The City is relying on industry driven science and Health Canada’s controversial assessments around the safety of pesticides. ***Indigenous stewardship is harm reduction and climate action *** Get Toronto’s parks off chemical-dependent colonial land management! Support Indigenous resurgence for climate action.

In April 2017, the Liberals released a commissioned report authored by Professor David Naylor and an esteemed committee deemed “the Fundamental Science Review”. This document, also referred to as the Naylor Report, received great support from the Science community as it signaled a massive shift away from muzzling scientists under Stephen Harper’s war on science. While the Liberals have taken some positive steps, they have taken far more photos and largely ignored the report’s main recommendations to significantly boost funding for discovery research and create a new National Advisory Council on Research and Innovation (NACRI). The Minister of Science, Kirsty Duncan, has remained mute on my questions in the House of Commons on whether they will fully implement the report and still have not answered September 29th letter on the matter.

A healthy research environment supported by government funding is important to all Canadians because it means scientists have the freedom to pursue investigator-led research. Such research is important because it often leads to discovery, such as life-saving technologies, vaccines and drugs, or innovation developments like TV, radio, and the internet. Overall, these discoveries can equate to a better quality of life for Canadians. New research and innovation can also contribute to the economy by creating new technology companies that bring with them high paying jobs.

Liberal inaction on the Naylor report is disappointing as is the fact that my attempt to get clear answers from the Minister continues to be stonewalled. Insert First Name, this is why I am calling on you to sign my petition: Let’s stand up for Canadian Science

Your signature will help me keep pressure on the Liberals to full implement the Naylor report. If you require a hard copy of the petition please request it by emailing [email protected]. It can be mailed back to my Ottawa office postage free once completed. The benefit to the hard copy petition is that with every 25 signatures I have the ability to rise in the house, table the petition, and talk about why we need to implement the he Naylor Report now.

I invite you to join me and by signing my petition and promoting the petition by tweeting
