Nimetz says Greek obsession with Macedonia was driven by fears for its century old northern gains

In a lengthy interview with Deutsche Welle, long time UN mediator in the Macedonian name issue Matthew Nimetz reveals that the reason for Greek obsession with Macedonia is the ethnically diverse composition of the part of Macedonia Greece occupied a century ago. Nimetz acknowledges that Greece got all it wanted from Macedonia in the dispute, but insists that Macedonians have to right to call themselves what they like – although he uses “Slavs” in the interview.
What many in the West didn’t understand about the Greek position is that Northern Greece was included in modern Greece much later, after the Balkan wars. That part of Greece had a very mixed population, with Slavs, Turks, Vlachs, Albanians and Jews. During the Civil War in Greece, a good portion of the Communist army, as we in the US called it, was comprised of Slavic population and they received help from Tito. Therefore, for Greece, the northern threat was not a made up term, but constituted actual danger that could flare up again with the appearance of the Republic of Macedonia, Nimetz told Deutsche Welle.
He lists the many concession Greece obtained with the Prespa treaty. “It was a good solution for them, they got all they asked for in the past years. The name is used ‘erga omnes’, the historic issues are acknowledged, there are clear concessions in anti-irredentism. I think this is a major success for Greece in many regards, but some in Greece are trying to turn this diplomatic and strategic win into a psychological defeat”.

The treaty names the Macedonian nationality as “Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia” – a formula which Zoran Zaev claims refers to nationality and the Macedonian ethnic group, while Greeks say merely declares the citizenship regardless of nationality. Nimetz was asked about the growing cases where, given this grey area, foreign media and commentators are adopting the term “Northmacedonian” instead of “Macedonian”. He says that the problem was foreseen, but that the treaty allows Macedonians to declare themselves as Macedonian. Listing the example of North and South Korea, Nimetz insists that the people of these two countries can call themselves just “Korean”, although most of the world adds the geographic adjective to their names. Pressed on this issue, Nimetz says he is sorry the treaty was not signed in Chinese, and left ineligible for the citizens of both countries.
Asked when was the issue closest to being resolved, he laments the death of Boris Trajkovski who, he believes, would have resolved it. The 2008 NATO Summit in Bucharest was a missed opportunity which was undermined by the high levels of anger and the lack of support from the US. Nikola Gruevski, Nimetz says, was not willing to make the last step and sign away the name.

Further, like our officers do on the roads the Marine unit patrols all the water that falls under the Region of Peel to ensure everyone is safe and following the rules while out on their boats.
If you are planning to consume alcohol ensure your boat is anchored and have permanent sleeping, kitchen and toilet facilities on board or have a designated driver who can get you back to the dock safely.
Remember, water safety is a shared responsibility. If you see or know someone who is drinking and operating the boat or putting other people in danger call 9-1-1 immediately and report the situation. You can also call 905-453-311 for any non-emergency situations.

US charges Julian Assange with 17 counts under Espionage Act

New York, May 23, 2019--The Trump administration today disclosed 17 new criminal charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange under the Espionage Act for unlawfully obtaining and disclosing national defense information.
"The indictment of Julian Assange under the Espionage Act for publishing classified information is an attack on the First Amendment and a threat to all journalists everywhere who publish information that governments would like to keep secret," said CPJ's Executive Director Joel Simon. "Press freedom in the United States and around the world is imperiled by this prosecution."
In early April, the Trump administration unsealed a separate indictment against Assange, alleging that he had violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) in the course of his work obtaining and publishing documents from Chelsea Manning, a former U.S. Army intelligence analyst. British authorities arrested Assange after Ecuadoran officials lifted his protection in their embassy in London, where he had been since 2012, on April 11, 2019. The U.S. is seeking his extradition from the U.K.

CPJ mission finds increased intimidation, shrinking space for free press in the Philippines
Manila, April 16, 2019--A Committee to Protect Journalists mission to the Philippines, led by Board Chair Kathleen Carroll, found increasing levels of intimidation and a shrinking space for the free press in the country. The mission—joined by Peter Greste, director of the Australia-based Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom (AJF), and CPJ Asia Program Coordinator Steven Butler—is in Manila this week, meeting with a wide range of journalists and government officials.
Based on these meetings, CPJ is extremely concerned about the various types of formal and informal pressure that journalists face. A series of 11 legal cases against the news website Rappler that appear to be politically motivated have created a sense of fear throughout the media industry, leading to self-censorship. Government officials have repeatedly attacked the press, and are threatening to withhold the license of the TV network ABS-CBN.
“The oppressive working environment for journalists in the Philippines is alarming,” said Carroll. “The Duterte government files case after case against Rappler while the president himself lobs sustained, often personal attacks against individual journalists. Online harassment of journalists is highly organized and vicious.”
During their conversations with CPJ, journalists also cited the practice of “red tagging”--accusing reporters, and even the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, of communist affiliation--as putting them in jeopardy of attack or arrest. Smaller news websites covering controversial human rights topics have suffered huge distributed denial of service attacks originating from the Philippines, according to site managers.
“The AJF recognizes the importance of supporting press freedom across the region, and we share CPJ’s concern about what’s happening here,” Greste said. “Government forces are finding new and increasingly sophisticated ways to shut down press freedom so the attacks on Rappler and others have a chilling effect across all journalists. That is profoundly damaging the country’s democracy.”
The Philippines ranks fifth on CPJ’s Impunity Index, which measures the extent to which the killers of journalists escape punishment. The 2009 Maguindanao massacre, in which 32 of those killed were journalists, remains the worst single incident of journalist killing in CPJ records. Not a single conviction has yet been obtained for these murders.

Ο Πωλ Γκραιγκ Ρόμπερτς (Paul Craig Roberts) οικονομολόγος, καθηγητής, συγγραφέας, πρώην υπουργός, με άρθρο φωτιά περιγράφει με τα μελανότερα χρώματα τη σύγχρονη Ελληνική Τραγωδία, τονίζοντας πως η Ελλάδα έχει τελειώσει. Είναι νεκρή και το κουφάρι της έχει πεταχτεί στα σκυλιά.
Αυτό αναφέρει σε νέα ανάλυση του στο Ινστιτούτου Πολιτικής Οικονομίας, όπου υπενθυμίζει ότι εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες Έλληνες κυρίως νέοι και επαγγελματίες, έχουν εγκαταλείψει τη νεκρή Ελλάδα. Το ποσοστό γεννήσεων είναι πολύ χαμηλότερο από το μέγεθος που είναι αναγκαίο για να διατηρηθεί το υπόλοιπο του πληθυσμού. Η λιτότητα που επιβλήθηκε στον ελληνικό λαό από την ΕΕ, το ΔΝΤ και τις ελληνικές κυβερνήσεις έχει ως αποτέλεσμα την συρρίκνωση της ελληνικής οικονομίας κατά 25%.
Η πτώση είναι ισοδύναμη της Αμερικανικής Μεγάλης Ύφεσης, αλλά στην Ελλάδα τα αποτελέσματα ήταν χειρότερα. Ο Πρόεδρος Franklin D. Roosevelt μαλάκωσε τις επιπτώσεις της μαζικής ανεργίας με τους νόμους περί κοινωνικής ασφάλισης και άλλα στοιχεία ενός δικτύου κοινωνικής ασφάλειας, όπως η ασφάλεια των καταθέσεων, και τα προγράμματα δημοσίων έργων, ενώ η ελληνική κυβέρνηση μετά τις παραγγελίες από το ΔΝΤ και την ΕΕ επιδείνωσε τις επιπτώσεις της μαζικής ανεργίας με την απομάκρυνση του δικτύου κοινωνικής ασφάλισης.
Παραδοσιακά, όταν μια κυρίαρχη χώρα, από τη διαφθορά, την κακοδιαχείριση, την κακή τύχη, ή απρόβλεπτα συμβάντα, βρέθηκε σε θέση να αποπληρώσει τα χρέη της, οι πιστωτές της χώρας, μείωσαν τις οφειλές προς το επίπεδο που η χρεωμένη χώρα θα μπορούσε να εξυπηρετήσει.Με την Ελλάδα υπήρξε μια αλλαγή παιχνιδιού. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Κεντρική Τράπεζα, με επικεφαλής τον Jean-Claude Trichet, και το Διεθνές Νομισματικό Ταμείο αποφάσισε ότι η Ελλάδα έπρεπε να καταβάλει ολόκληρο το ποσό των τόκων και κεφαλαίου των κρατικών ομολόγων της που βρίσκονται στην κατοχή των γερμανικών, των ολλανδικών, των γαλλικών και των ιταλικών τραπεζών.
Πώς θα επιτευχθεί αυτό; Με δύο τρόπους. Και οι δύο επιδείνωσαν σε μεγάλο βαθμό την οικονομίας της Ελλάδας, αφήνοντας τη χώρα σήμερα σε πολύ χειρότερη θέση από αυτή που βρισκόταν κατά την έναρξη της κρίσης πριν από σχεδόν μια δεκαετία.Κατά την έναρξη της «κρίσης», η οποία θα μπορούσε εύκολα να είχε λυθεί με τη διαγραφή μέρους του χρέους, το ελληνικό χρέος ήταν 129% του ελληνικού Ακαθάριστου Εγχώριου Προϊόντος.
Σήμερα το ελληνικό χρέος είναι 180% του ΑΕΠ. Γιατί;Η Ελλάδα δανείστηκε περισσότερα χρήματα για να πληρώσει τόκους στους πιστωτές της, οι οποίοι δεν έπρεπε να χάσουν ούτε ένα σεντ. Ο επιπλέον δανεισμός, που ονομάστηκε «διάσωση», δεν ήταν ένα σχέδιο διάσωσης της Ελλάδα. Ήταν μια διάσωση των πιστωτών της Ελλάδας.
Το καθεστώς Obama ενθάρρυνε αυτό το πακέτο διάσωσης, επειδή οι αμερικανικές τράπεζες περίμεναν ένα σχέδιο διάσωσης, αφού είχαν πουλήσει credit default swaps (CDS) του ελληνικού χρέους και δεν ήθελαν να πληρώσουν.Χωρίς σχέδιο διάσωσης οι αμερικανικές τράπεζες θα είχαν χάσει το στοίχημα και θα κατέβαλαν τα ασφάλιστρα κινδύνου των ελληνικών ομολόγων.
Επιπλέον, ζητήθηκε από την Ελλάδα να πουλήσει δημόσια περιουσιακά στοιχεία σε αλλοδαπούς και να αποδεκατίσει το κοινωνικό δίχτυ ασφαλείας, να μειώσει τις συντάξεις και την ιατρική περίθαλψη.Η Κίνα αγόρασε τα ελληνικά λιμάνια, η Γερμανία αγόρασε τα αεροδρόμια, ενώ διάφορες γερμανικές και ευρωπαϊκές οντότητες αγόρασαν τις ελληνικές επιχειρήσεις ύδατος.
Επίσης, κερδοσκόποι των ακινήτων αγόρασαν εκτάσεις σε ελληνικά νησιά για την ανάπτυξη ακινήτων.Αυτή η λεηλασία της ελληνικής δημόσιας περιουσίας δεν πήγε όμως προς τη μείωση του χρέους. Το χρέος, μεγαλύτερο από ποτέ, εξακολουθεί να ισχύει.Η οικονομία είναι μικρότερη από ποτέ. Η δήλωση ότι η ελληνική κρίση έχει τελειώσει είναι απλώς μια δήλωση ότι δεν έχει μείνει τίποτα για να πάρει κανείς πια από τον ελληνικό λαό.
Γιατί η Ελλάδα βυθίζεται γρήγορα. Όλα τα έσοδα που σχετίζονται με θαλάσσιους λιμένες, αεροδρόμια, δημοτικές επιχειρήσεις, και το υπόλοιπο της δημόσιας περιουσίας που έχει βίαια ιδιωτικοποιηθεί τώρα ανήκει σε ξένους που παίρνουν τα χρήματα από τη χώρα, οδηγώντας έτσι περαιτέρω χαμηλότερα την ελληνική οικονομία.
Οι πιστωτές έκλεψαν το οικονομικό μέλλον των Ελλήνων. Επίσης η Ελλάδα δεν είναι ένα κυρίαρχο έθνος. Εκεί κυριαρχεί πλέον η ΕΕ και το ΔΝΤ. Και ο ελληνικός λαός προδόθηκε από την κυβέρνηση Τσίπρα.Είχαν τη δυνατότητα να επαναστατήσουν και να χρησιμοποιήσουν τη βία για να ανατρέψουν την κυβέρνηση που τους πούλησε σε διεθνείς τραπεζίτες. Αντ ‘αυτού, οι Έλληνες δέχτηκαν την καταστροφή τους και δεν έκαναν τίποτα. Ουσιαστικά, ο ελληνικός πληθυσμός διέπραξε μια μαζική αυτοκτονία.
Η παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση του 2008 δεν έχει τελειώσει. Κρύβεται κάτω από το χαλί της μαζικής δημιουργίας χρήματος από τις ΗΠΑ, την ΕΕ, το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, και την ιαπωνική κεντρική τράπεζα.Η δημιουργία του χρήματος έχει κατά πολύ υπερβεί την αύξηση του πραγματικού προϊόντος και έχει οδηγήσει στα ύψη την αξία των χρηματοοικονομικών περιουσιακών στοιχείων πέρα από αυτό που μπορεί να υποστηρίζονται.Η εξέλιξη της κρίσης παραμένει προς το παρόν. Θα μπορούσε να οδηγήσει στην καταστροφή του δυτικού πολιτισμού.
