A study in movement, the Plan Cantilever Chair sees Barber Osgerby explore a new expression of the original Plan identity. Their first cantilever design retains its defining character of the while introducing a different sitting experience. The tubular steel structure flexes subtly with the body, making motion and sway part of the experience. Recognisably Plan, with a little more give.

"The rear view has always held a particular magic," says designer Edward Barber. "The seat appears to levitate, and since chairs are so often seen from behind, that view really matters. Plan Cantilever Chair is incredibly simple, but also rather cute and full of character."

Seen from behind, the absence of rear legs makes the seat of the Plan Cantilever Chair appear almost suspended, an effect particularly important for a chair that is often encountered around a table.

The British design studio Barber Osgerby has introduced, with their first cantilever chair, a subtle flex to the structure of the original Plan Chair, changing both the way the chair feels and the way it appears. The Plan Cantilever Chair is a natural continuation of the collection, while bringing a new dimension to its familiar visual language.

The Plan Studio Chair grew from conversations in Barber Osgerby’s studio about how the Plan Collection is used, and how it might evolve.

Developed in close collaboration with Fredericia, the chair introduces swivel, tilt and height adjustment, carefully integrated into the collection’s established design language. A four-star aluminium base brings the new functions together with the lightness and clarity that define the Plan Collection.

“The challenge was to make a chair that moves, adjusts and rolls, but still reads unmistakably as Plan. The base is so visually light that you barely notice the mechanics. It just glides,” says Jay Osgerby.

A different way of sitting.

A cantilever changes the experience of sitting: the motion and sway of the chair become part of the experience. Instead of resting rigidly on four legs, the tubular steel structure flexes subtly in response to the movements of the body.

Design Studio Baber Osgerby’s first cantilever chair is the latest addition to Fredericia’s Plan Collection. Retaining the collection’s hallmark – tubular steel, a light footprint and a seat and a back shaped with the body in mind – the result is an archetypal chair with a different kind of movement.

“The chair really did almost draw itself,” says designer Jay Osgerby. “Everything it needed was already in the Plan Chair.”

Last night, we welcomed Jay Osgerby to our Copenhagen showroom for an introduction to the latest additions to the Plan Collection by Barber Osgerby.

Joined by friends and familiar faces, Jay shared the thinking behind the Plan Cantilever Chair and Plan Studio Chair, from their defining forms to the details that make each design work.

Both chairs build on the visual language of the Plan Collection, exploring new ways of sitting and working while retaining the simplicity and lightness at the heart of the original design.
