Team AKVA paid a visit to our Scandinavian vinyl film manufacturer — a trusted partner for over 20 years. This is where our phthalate-free, 2-layer film for AKVA water mattresses is produced with precision and full ISO certification.
The premium film is made from approximately two-thirds pure PVC (white powder) and one-third liquid Mesamoll 2 plasticizer sourced from Dormagen, Germany, along with colorants and additional processing aids. The mixture is liquefied, then rolled and cooled through a calender process to create the finished film.
Together, we're continuously working on recycling systems and further improving our environmental footprint. Since mid-2025, AKVA customers can already choose mattresses made with Biovyn film — delivering 100% identical quality, but with one key difference: the PVC content is no longer derived from fossil fuels. Instead, it's based on bio-circular oils, such as those recovered from the paper industry or recycled cooking oils. This can reduce the carbon footprint of the PVC component by 90–100%.

The smooth, completely sealed surface of the water chamber is dust‑mite proof: neither house dust mites nor other allergens can nest inside – a clear advantage over conventional mattresses with fabric covers and foam cores. Everything that comes into contact with your skin can be removed and washed at high temperatures, and the water surface itself is cleaned with a single wipe – this gives you a hygienic sleeping environment that stays clean and is easy to maintain. For people with house dust or pollen allergies, this means fewer irritants in bed, easier breathing at night, and truly restorative sleep in their familiar bed frame.

On April 1, 2026, our colleague Thomas Wiese has celebrated his 25th anniversary with AKVA.
This makes Thomas part of an exclusive group of eleven colleagues who have been with our company for more than 25 years—a fact we are very proud of and deeply grateful for.

With his many years of experience, technical expertise, and profound knowledge of AKVA, Thomas makes an important contribution every day to the ongoing development of our company and the entire waterbed industry. He is exactly the kind of employee every company wishes for—dedicated, reliable, and remarkably versatile. Thomas doesn’t just have ideas—he puts them into practice and continues to refine them, including in his work for the German Waterbed Association e.V.

As a vital link between our customers and production, Thomas is highly valued as a salesperson, sleep coach, and colleague. Together, we have transformed the waterbed from a simple product into a technically advanced sleep system whose ergonomic properties bring greater rest and well-being to people all over the world—including as multisensory beds for therapy and spa environments. In times marked by high speed, stress, and restlessness, this is more important than ever.
