Hotel Helka Hotel Helka has trusted Artek in its interior design since the 1990s. The lobby, breakfast room, and all the guest rooms feature Aalto-designed furniture. After decades of heavy daily use, some of the furniture naturally required refurbishment.

Artek 2nd Cycle has helped restore the pieces by relacquering the wooden parts and reupholstering various Aalto armchair models.
 
For the Aalto Tank chairs, the classic Artek Zebra fabric was chosen. Aalto’s model 44 armchairs were re-upholstered in a brand-new brown-and-white Zebra pattern.
 
Next time you’re in Helsinki, come and visit Hotel Helka’s beautiful lobby bar or enjoy lunch at the Japanese restaurant, where you’ll also find Aalto tables and model 66 chairs.

The Making of Modern Living exhibition focuses on Artek’s first store, the Fabianinkatu Store, which opened in 1936.

It explores how the founders’ philosophy of “Art and Technology” and their idea of “Modern Living” were communicated to visitors through the store space.

Rather than simply celebrating its 90th anniversary, the exhibition looks at some of the key elements that have shaped Artek’s stores from the early days until today.

The exhibition runs until 25th of September and we are open on Thursdays and Fridays.

The Making of Modern Living
Inspired by Artek’s first store, 1936

In 1936, Artek opened its first store on Fabianinkatu in Helsinki. More than a place to buy furniture, the store was conceived as a cultural space for promoting a modern culture of living. Furniture, lighting, textiles, glassware and artworks were presented in interiors that visitors could experience rather than simply browse.

Ninety years later, this exhibition explores how Artek communicated its founding ideals of merging ‘art’ and ‘technology’ and promoted a modern culture of living through the store environment.

Centred around vintage furniture pieces, archival materials and interior settings inspired by the original store, the exhibition invites visitors to discover how modern living was imagined, communicated and experienced during Artek’s early years.
