The Noguchi Museum is celebrating the extraordinary history of Akari through a special exhibition ‘No Ordinary Light: Akari at 75,’ opening at the Noguchi Museum in New York on November 4.

2026 marks the 75th anniversary of Isamu Noguchi’s Akari light sculptures.

When Isamu Noguchi visited Gifu in 1951, he began creating his first Akari light sculptures, inspired by the city’s long tradition of paper lantern craftsmanship. More than 200 designs followed, united by Noguchi’s vision of light as both illumination and a feeling.

The Noguchi Museum is celebrating the extraordinary history of Akari through a special exhibition ‘No Ordinary Light: Akari at 75,’ opening at the Noguchi Museum in New York on November 4.
