But sauna is ultimately about what happens inside: the presence, balance, connection, joy and wellbeing it can bring into your life.

And in the end, the most important view is yours.

Metal roof or a “rain jacket”?

What would you choose for your outdoor sauna?

Details matter but a roof is not exactly a minor detail to be ignored.

If your sauna is going to spend the next 10, 20 or 30 years outside, or even longer as our Hetki Saunas are built to do, what protects it from above is pretty fundamental.

Metal, bitumen, asphalt shingles, PVC or fabric covers, a separate shelter, or simply exposed wood (i.e. no exterior roofing at all), a “roof” can mean surprisingly different things.

When choosing a sauna, it is easy to focus on design, size, windows, benches and heater. But the roof can make a significant difference to how well your sauna is protected from the weather, how much maintenance it requires and how it ages.

And, importantly, to the sauna experience itself.

Today is Finnish Nature Day.

The purpose of the day is to celebrate Finnish nature and encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy everything nature has to offer.

In 2017, Finland became the first country in the world to officially fly its national flag in honor of nature, and Finnish Nature Day is now an established flag day.

Did you know, for example, that around 75% of Finland’s land area is covered by forest, making it the most forested country in Europe?

That nearly 10% of Finland is covered by water, with over 188,000 lakes across the country?

That Finland has more than 80,000 islands, one of the highest numbers in the world?

And since our country also has over 3 million saunas, many of them at summer cabins right in the middle of nature, it feels only natural that we even have a flower named saunakukka (“kukka” means flower in Finnish).

Nature, just like sauna, probably plays its big part in why Finland is ranked the happiest country in the world year after year.

Hetki is a log sauna. For a good reason.

Our saunas are built from logs made of certified spruce, grown slowly in the northern forests of Finland. Slow growth means tight-grained, strong wood, durable for a lifetime of enjoyment.

Logs are not just beautiful, they are also smart. Because the logs that we use are made from the tree’s core, the hardest and most resilient part, they have excellent insulating capacity, stay stable in shape, and make the sauna energy efficient. Spruce logs are breathable, withstand moisture, and age gracefully.

One of the greatest advantages of a log sauna is its thermal mass. As the solid log walls gradually warm up, they begin to radiate gentle heat of their own. Instead of feeling surrounded only by hot air, you feel enveloped by warmth. It's one of the reasons why a traditional log sauna feels so different.

Wood is natural, safe, and soothing for all senses. It carries the clean scent of Finnish forests and turns a sauna into a true haven of well-being.

Sauna is very much about health and well-being. Spruce, like other conifers, has long been known for its refreshing scent and beneficial effects on breathing and relaxation. Sauna, and namely a log sauna, is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind - boosting recovery, lowering stress, bringing happiness, and improving overall vitality.

Each log also has its own character - no two pieces are ever identical - giving every Hetki outdoor sauna a unique look that cannot be replicated.

The oldest saunas in Finland were, and still are, log saunas. So is Hetki.
