Rugby may open doors, but a playing career doesnโ€™t last forever.

Ten young rugby players are now studying at CATD Nadave on scholarships through a new partnership with the Fiji Rugby Players Association (FRPA), developing vocational skills while continuing their rugby journey.

The players, referred through FRPA from rugby unions including Ba, Northland and Rewa, are undertaking training in trades such as automotive engineering, carpentry and welding.

For FRPA, Director Wame Lewaravu said the goal is clear: help young players prepare for life after rugby by giving them a second career option to fall back on.

For CATD Nadave, rugby is also a platform for positive change, bringing disciplined, motivated young athletes into the school who can influence and encourage their peers.

As CATD Nadave Director Apolosa Silatolu puts it:

โ€œOur core is education. Rugby is a platform we can use to influence young people to choose education and develop skills that will carry them through life.โ€

Rugby - Skills - Education and a future beyond the game.

Head, Hands and Heart!

More than 25 years after graduating from CATD Nadave, Tevita Waigaga from Vunisea Village, Dreketi in Macuata, still carries the lessons he learnt at Nadave into his work today.

Tevita was part of Group 48, Carpentry and Joinery, Class of 1999. Today, he works with Fiji Airports as an Aerodrome Officer, helping to maintain and mark the runway to ensure aircrafts can land safely.

โ€œThe training I learnt at that time, I am still able to use in my job today. If the runway is not attended to properly, planes cannot land, and tourism and travel cannot happen.โ€

But when Tevita looks back at Nadave, it is not only the trade skills that stand out. He remembers the formation and nurturing that helped shape him from a young man into a responsible adult.

โ€œIt really helped my spiritual life and taught me to be responsible. Without Nadave at that time, I wouldnโ€™t be where I am today. It was a great decision to study at Nadave.โ€

His message to young people considering their future is simple:

โ€œIf you dream of studying somewhere, CATD Nadave is a great school to study in โ€” not just to learn skills, but for the formation of your life and family, and to help you build a good future.โ€

Vinaka Tevita for carrying the Nadave story with you.

We were at the Fiji Airports Family Fun Day, taking the opportunity to promote CATD Nadave, meet prospective students and families, and catch up with some of our alumni.

It was also a chance to strengthen our relationship with Fiji Airports โ€“ an organisation that employs graduates from CATD Nadave.

For us, engagement doesnโ€™t end when our students graduate.

Staying connected with our alumni and the organisations that employ them helps us understand industry needs and ensures our training continues to prepare young people for the world of work.

We met up with CATD Nadave Alumni Tevita Waigaga who now works as an Aerodrome Technician at Fiji Airports.

Waigaga said it was a pleasure to meet the team from Nadave (left - right: Luke Ravukadavu, Tevita Waigaga, Master Opeti Ritova and Director Aporosa Silatolu).

Vinaka vakalevu Fiji Airports for having us!

Hands-on learning is a big part of training at CATD Nadave.

Our Plumbing & Sheet-Metal students are building practical skills for work in plumbing, water and drainage systems, roofing and sheet-metal fabrication.

The one-year programme combines classroom learning with practical workshop training in Semester 1, followed by industrial attachment and a trade test in Semester 2, giving students the opportunity to take what they have learnt into a real work environment.

With intakes in January and July, the programme provides a pathway for young people interested in building practical skills for employment, apprenticeships or eventually starting their own trade business.

Interested in learning a trade? Plumbing & Sheet-Metal could be for you.

Meet Rejieli Masiveni, the only female student studying Carpentry at CATD Nadave this semester.

Hailing from Vunatovau Village, Nokonoko, Nadroga, Rejieli is learning the practical skills of the trade and showing that carpentry is a career pathway for women too.

Her message to young women and girls is simple: give carpentry a go!

She is encouraging more young women to consider studying Carpentry at CATD Nadave and build skills that can open doors to employment, entrepreneurship and a future in the construction industry.

At just 20, Kitione Lagivala of Vunisea, Dreketi, Macuata is already putting his skills to work as a Yamaha Technician with ASCO Motors.

Kitione completed his Certificate III in Automotive Engineering at CATD Nadave and graduated in February 2026. For him, one of the strengths of studying at Nadave was the strong focus on practical learning.

โ€œThere was a lot of practical learning and less theory. The teachers were very encouraging, and the quality education at Nadave is really benefiting me in the field.โ€

His employer has also recognised the difference.

According to ASCO Motors Training Manager Avinash Chand, students coming through Nadave have shown commitment and good behaviour in the workplace.

Kitioneโ€™s journey shows where practical, skills-based training can lead, from the classroom and workshop at Nadave to employment in the automotive industry.

Learn with your head, hands and heart at CATD Nadave.

STRONG INTEREST IN CATD NADAVE!

There was strong interest in studying at CATD Nadave during the Navosa Youth Festival and Government Services Roadshow, held from 13โ€“14 August at Vatureba Grounds, Vatumali, Navosa.

Demand for application forms was high, with many parents and youth stopping by to learn more about the training programmes and opportunities available at CATD Nadave.

It was encouraging to meet so many young people thinking seriously about gaining practical skills and building a pathway for their future.

Learn a skill. Build your future.
