Treasure hunting in Chiang Mai, at Nong Ho Flea Market.

Located south of the Old City, Nong Ho is an open-air second-hand market where objects are laid out on tarps or small stalls. Rather than a conventional antiques market, it brings together household objects, tools, furniture, plants and older pieces, often with little distinction between the everyday and the collectible.

The market also reflects Chiang Mai’s position within a wider northern Southeast Asian cultural area, historically connected to Myanmar and the Shan regions. Among the pieces we came across that day: figurative metal bells, carved wooden objects, lotus-shaped lamps and Burmese tattoo sheets, alongside tropical plants and large monsteras
