We’re excited to be presenting ‘MESOAMERICAN MODERN’ by the acclaimed writer and curator Su Wu, published by Phaidon
When the author Su Wu set out with photographer luis garvan to trace the presence of Mesoamerican ideas in Mexican homes, she thought they would be documenting a history, like the aura surrounding artifacts.
Instead, what they found was the living presence of Mesoamerican cultures in an architecture and design movement distinctly of the Americas. In these spaces of private reflection, ancient ideas are treated not as relics of prehistory but as vital sources of technical expertise and symbolic significance. And in assembling the elements that together constitute this engagement with the past, Wu lucked into a larger understanding: at the heart of what was so blatantly mislabeled a New World, it is the oldest ideas driving an expanded narrative of material, craft, and care — and creating nothing less than a new New World.
