Shop drop of some favourites at

A porridge spurtle is a traditional Scottish kitchen utensil designed to minimise lumps in your porridge. The smaller surface area allows it to glide smoothly through your porridge in a way that a spoon just doesn't.

We don't know why, but this is one of our best selling gift items. Our design is a simple one, using a traditional design shape with a thistle top.

Also landed are our new coasters range, and new boards.

Perthshire Artisans were one of the first groups of people where we tentatively floated the idea of The Joinery Coffee Shop as a hub for all things local and creative alongside our own wooden products. They couldn't have been more supportive

Thank you for the ongoing support. For those unfamiliar with this work consider giving them a wee follow to find out more about this collaboration of Perthshire based professional artists and craftspeople.

Some new bestsellers ready for

27/03/2026

Perthshire Artisans is full of amazing work by amazing people and is a fantastic network for creative professionals in Perthshire. And yet among all of this great work it is our most humble of products that keeps flying the flag for simple and traditional design

While our spurtles have no doubt developed over the many turned on our lathe, holding onto the simple traditional shape is so important 🙂

Another spurtle sale today! We've lost count of the number of Highwood Furniture wooden hand-turned spurtles which have sold on our website over the past few months, both locally and across Scotland, and a number heading down south too.

This Scottish wooden kitchen tool, used to stop your porridge going lumpy, dates back to the 15th century - which shows that good design never goes out of style!

We have been lucky enough to be involved with a couple of projects now repurposing timber from this beautiful ship during the ongoing works by her talented restoration team. The history and stories that go with it run deep.

And we had our own tiny part in this latest chapter of the story -
each climber on the first day of their fundraising mast climb received a keyring from Dundee Heritage Trust, made by us from a piece of timber from the Discovery herself.

If you have a piece of timber close to your heart feel free to drop us a message or contact us for a chat about how to give it a new lease of life.

As an introduction to some of the fabulous artists and makers who have kindly shared their work with us in the Joinery coffee shop gift shop it seemed silly not to start with what brought us here in the first place.

We wanted to create an environment where we could share our love - not just for wood and wood products - but with natural, sustainable, and local products. The Joinery coffee shop has offered us the opportunity to do this.

Our background, as many of you now know is in furniture making and wood working. Colin remains focussed on the furniture side of what we do and is open for commissions. Hannah is in the process of scheduling a little workshop time as our gift shop pieces are starting to look a little sparce!

Some steam bends are bigger than other steam bends

And the age old adage of "you can never have enough clamps"

But how pretty does this process look? 😍
