Is your horse spending a little more time indoors? 🍂🐴

The darker evenings are creeping in, fields are getting wetter and, for many horses, October means a change in routine and more time in the stable.

It's a good time to take another look at their stable environment before winter really arrives.

Is the bed deep and supportive?
Is there plenty of ventilation?
Are wet areas being removed regularly?
Is dust being kept to a minimum?

A few small changes now can help create a comfortable, healthy place for your horse to rest throughout the months ahead.

🌬️ 5 simple ways to improve your horse’s stable air quality

The stable environment can have a significant impact on your horse’s respiratory health – and sometimes, small changes to everyday management can make a real difference. 🐴

As part of Back to School with Bedmax, we’re sharing five practical ways to help create a cleaner, healthier stable environment:

1️⃣ Maximise ventilation – keep windows, vents and barn doors open where possible to encourage fresh airflow.

2️⃣ Choose low-dust bedding – look for dust-extracted bedding that helps minimise the amount of respirable dust entering the stable.

3️⃣ Think about forage – choose a low-dust forage option and feed from a low position where possible.

4️⃣ Be mindful of dusty jobs – keep your horse out of the stable while mucking out, grooming and sweeping.

5️⃣ Keep beds clean – regularly remove manure and urine-soaked bedding to help maintain good stable hygiene.

Remembering Colin Guthrie

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our former colleague and friend, Colin Guthrie.

Colin was part of the Bedmax story for many years, first joining in 1993 following 22 years of service with the Gordon Highlanders. Over the years, he became a familiar and much-loved figure throughout the Northern and Scottish equine community, travelling far and wide delivering Haymax, Bedmax and whatever else was needed.

During his time with us, Colin and his Scania covered an extraordinary 1.4 million miles together – testament not only to the miles he travelled on behalf of the business, but to the meticulous care he took in everything he did.

Colin retired in 2020 after 27 years, leaving behind many memories among colleagues, customers and friends alike.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Colin’s family and friends at this very sad time.

He will be very fondly remembered by all of us at Bedmax.
