Native pippy oak planks, arranged back into sequence. The timber from this log will become the door panels and drawer fronts for a kitchen island, creating a harmonious look across the finished piece.

My next commission is a two-drawer chest with floating shelves, made to sit alongside a bookcase I built for the same clients a couple of years ago.

For the bookcase, we used their own English walnut — felled from their garden years ago — paired with English sycamore I sourced. We’ve now used every last piece from that log, so for this piece we needed to find timber that could hold its own next to it.

I settled on French walnut from English Woodlands Timber in Sussex. I went down to hand-select the boards myself — everything came from just two logs, which matters when you’re matching grain and colour across a piece like this.
It’ll be built mainly in solid timber, including the drawers which will run traditionally. For the drawer boxes I’m planning a contrasting timber — ash, maple or sycamore — to complement the walnut rather than compete with it. A little birch ply for some of the interior carcass, but otherwise solid throughout.
I design every piece I make, and this one I particularly enjoyed working out. Looking forward to getting into the making now.
I’ll be sharing stages of the build here, and there’ll be a full journey video covering all the major stages of construction and installation over on the channel.

Furniture making is for me a combination of traditional and modern methods. The Domino jointing system is one of the modern approaches to jointing that I do often use and happy to do so where a real mortise and tenon is not feasible. I love the fact that the Dominos are like mini tenons, stub tenons or loose tongue tenons. The result is a very accurate and firm joint which traditionally would not have been possible in certain situations like here with these front frames.

Other manufacturers have perhaps created more sophisticated jointing that is definitely very good and maybe one day I will consider using. However I struggle with the concept of allowing plastic parts into my construction, no matter how clever the joints are.

Trying to allow what feels right from a craft standpoint to guide my construction methods sometimes means a simpler or even cruder way ahead and that’s ok for me.

The timber selection process for me, is a huge part of what I do. It is in a way as important as the actual making. Great care and effort goes into looking at each board, and thinking about the best use of it for the project in hand.

Fine tuning the lid fit to these two English walnut boxes using a Stanley 93 shoulder plane. A very useful traditional tool which gets a lot of use both in the workshop and onsite.

A wardrobe I made back in 2024 from some beautiful solid pippy Scottish elm.

To reduce the amount of wood needed as well as labour time, I made divisions between each section with shelving where required. This meant that the walls and floor are still visible, and this is an approach I find works quite well for my work where the client doesn’t require full on cabinets behind.
