Did you know that it takes more than 60 years to grow, cut and grade the timber sideboards that we use for our JB Red ?

To showcase the entire process, from the sustainable forestry practices to the nursery helping to replace the felled trees and the sawmill processes used to select and cut into the materials we need for our battens, we have partnered with Moelven to arrange a tour of their facilities in Sweden and Norway.

Youth unemployment and the skills shortage facing the construction industry present the perfect opportunity for manufacturers, training providers and roofing contractors to bridge the gap, gain much-needed manpower and help change lives at the same time.

That's why, last week, Marley, in partnership with Bauder, South and City College Birmingham and the Department for Work and Pensions, held an introductory presentation on how roofing contractors and prospective learners can support each other through bootcamp schemes that prepare young people to work on site, contribute to the team and follow all relevant health and safety procedures.

This tried-and-tested approach, combining training provided by manufacturers and training centres, delivers results not just for the learners and contractors involved, but also for the local community by helping to pass on valuable skills and ensuring the trades not only survive but thrive.

For us at Marley, social value is about the practical, not merely the ideal. From local initiatives to systematic process changes, what matters most is making a tangible, positive impact on people's lives.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2026 AJ Student Prize, celebrating some of the most thoughtful and ambitious work emerging from the next generation of architects.

India Weisser of Oxford Brookes University and Oscar Loo of University College London were named joint undergraduate winners, while Jake Southcombe of De Montfort University took home the postgraduate prize. Elija Halil of the University of Kent was also highly commended in the postgraduate category.

This year’s entries explored a remarkable breadth of ideas, from intergenerational housing and changing landscapes to community infrastructure and the hidden histories of place. Across the winning projects, there was a clear focus on addressing real-world social and environmental challenges through considered, research-led design.

For manufacturers like Marley, supporting future architects goes beyond the products we make. It also means sharing the technical knowledge, practical experience and understanding of materials that can help turn ambitious ideas into buildings that work in the real world.

As the profession continues to evolve, we are proud to support opportunities that help students question, explore and shape what comes next.

Did you know it takes a mere 65 seconds for one tonne of CO2 to be captured at the CCS plant in Brevik?

Last week, Heidelberg Materials welcomed Lydia Hunter, Alex Price, Dan Redfern, James Seawell and Denis Popescu from Marley on a tour of its facilities to showcase the cutting-edge hardware that is used in the UK's first roofing tile to use carbon capture technology: Marley's new Edgemere 2.0 low-carbon concrete roof tile.

There, discussions focused on the considerations around sustainability, including how the limestone mine, the cement factory, CCS equipment and the alternative fuels processing plant were all built close to each other to help minimise the environmental impact of the transport needed to keep operations going.

Thank you to all the members of Heidelberg Materials who were involved in the event and in supporting Marley to reduce the carbon impact of the products we manufacture.
