❤️ The Sleepers Story – Part 5: Does Anyone Remember This Guy?

If you visited Sleepers / Beds Direct in the 1990s, there’s a chance you might recognise this face… 👀

Meet the Silentnight Hippo! 🦛

Back in the 90s, he made a few appearances at the shop, wandering around outside in his rather fetching striped pyjamas and certainly getting plenty of attention from passing cars!

Looking at these old photos has brought back some brilliant memories, and we’re wondering just how many of you remember seeing him.

Maybe you spotted him outside the shop?

Maybe your children met him?

❤️ The Sleepers Story – Part 4: Caerleon

By 1992, Sleepers had been going for 11 years and it was time for the next big step.

Robert and Margaret bought the building in Caerleon that many of you will recognise today.

But it looked very different back then…

The building was bought primarily to give the growing business something it desperately needed, more warehouse space and offices.

And, as these photos show, there was plenty of work to do!

What started as a fairly empty building was gradually fitted out, with racking going up, stock moving in and part of the premises becoming a shop.

Eventually, the familiar Beds Direct from Sleepers sign went up outside and another chapter of the family business had begun. ❤️

It’s strange looking at these photos now and seeing just how different Caerleon was in those early days.

❤️ The Sleepers Story – Part 3: Our First Van

As the business started to grow, so did the deliveries.

And eventually came another big moment for Robert and Margaret, buying their first brand-new van. 🚚

A Bedford CF, proudly sign written with SLEEPERS BED CENTRES. You certainly couldn’t miss it coming down the road!

It might not look like a huge milestone now, but for a young family business, buying a new van was a big step.

Robert was still very hands on, working long days and making deliveries himself as Sleepers became busier and more people began to hear about the little bed shop in Llantrisant.

And if you look closely at this photo, there’s another little piece of Sleepers history hiding in the background, the original delivery trailer, which stayed around for years afterwards.

Looking back at these old photographs really brings home just how much has changed.

But one thing hasn’t, we’ve always been a family business built around looking after our customers. ❤️

🥵 Struggling to sleep in this heat? Try this simple bedtime cooling hack! ❄️

When the temperature rises, getting a good night’s sleep can feel impossible, but this little trick might help.

Before bed, fill a hot water bottle with cold water and pop it in the fridge for around 30–60 minutes. Don’t freeze it solid, as this could damage the bottle.

Then simply wrap it in a thin towel or pillowcase and place it near:

🦶 Your feet or ankles
❄️ Behind your knees
🙌 Against your wrists

Cooling these areas can help you feel more comfortable when you’re trying to drift off on those warm summer nights. 😴

❤️ The Sleepers Story – Part 2: The Early Deliveries

Last week, we shared how Sleepers Bed Centre began in Llantrisant in 1981, with Robert and Margaret Smith taking a chance on their first little shop.

But opening the doors was only the beginning…

In those early days, there was no delivery van or team of drivers.

There was Robert, a Vauxhall Cavalier and a trailer. ❤️

After working in the shop, Robert would load up the trailer and make deliveries himself, often in the evenings and at weekends.

It was very much a case of doing whatever needed to be done to get the business off the ground.

Then came a moment that could have made things even harder…

Robert’s Cavalier was written off in an accident on the motorway.

Thankfully, Robert was able to carry on, and the damaged car was eventually replaced with a newer one and a new trailer. The original Sleepers trailer, however, wasn’t quite ready for retirement…

It stayed in the yard for many years afterwards, proudly advertising Sleepers Bed Centre!

📸 And here it is in the photo — the original Sleepers trailer alongside the replacement car.

It’s funny looking back at photographs like these. At the time, it was simply a small family business doing what it had to do. Nobody knew where the journey would eventually lead.

❤️ Where our Story Began… 45 Years of Helping You Sleep Better.

On 4th July 1981, Robert and Margaret Smith opened the very first Sleepers Bed Centre in Llantrisant.

The shopping centre was home to the first Tesco supermarket in Wales and as part of the planning agreement, six independent shops had to be included. Sleepers Bed Centre was lucky enough to become one of them.

Before opening the shop, Robert had spent years working as a sales representative for Slumberland and Relyon Beds. Travelling across the UK, he saw how people were buying beds and believed there was a better way.

He wanted to create a bed shop where customers received honest advice, great service and real value, not just a sales pitch.

So, he took the leap.

Margaret was a full time teacher, spending her evenings and weekends helping in the shop while the business found its feet. Together, they built Sleepers one customer at a time.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe that one small shop would grow into the family business that’s still proudly serving South Wales today.
