One of the questions we get asked a lot is can you make my table lighter in colour? The answer will depend on a few things.

Is the colour in the finish or the wood? Tables where the stain has been applied directly to the wood are much harder to lighten as the colour penetrates the surface whereas tables with colour added to the finish have a better success rate.

What sort of wood is it made from? Woods such as oak, ash, mango, beech usually do lighten after the removal of the finish whereas darker tropical woods like mahogany, walnut, rosewood and teak don't.

Can sanding help? Well firstly check if the table is veneered. If the answers yes then hard sanding is a big no no! Veneers are extremely thin, it's very easy to sand through to the board underneath. It's best to avoid sanding woods like mahogany, walnut and rosewood as over time, their patina mellows, so sanding will result in their colour richening/darkening considerably. Woods like ash, oak and beech can lighten when sanded. Helpful or still confused? Come and talk to Jenny our finisher for more advice this weekend at North East Open Studios

We recently had the good fortune of restoring some pieces which gave us quite the exciting surprise!
The four items had been made by the highly respected company of George Flint in New York, then shipped here by the client's aunt.
It was all painted with thick white paint. What we didn't expect was to find beautiful birds eye maple veneers underneath.
A total treat to work on and it shows you never know what might be lurking underneath and is always worth investigating!

We were honoured to be involved in the design and manufacture of this special piece for the Friends of St Machar's Cathedral. This prayer table was made to allow members to privately write their personal prayer and post it into the box which is incorporated into the top of the table. The box can then be removed and taken forward to be blessed. Made from European Oak, the laminated arches mirror the Cathedral's beautiful stained glass windows.

A wee post from our finisher Jenny.......

The Kiltwalk is 5 weeks today! I've tried to be pretty quiet about it, as I'm very aware times are a bit tough for people just now.
I love the training for this walk though and am so lucky that I live somewhere pretty beautiful to go out in. This year Angie, Corinna and I are walking for New Arc Wildlife Rescue. They are busy all year and charitable donations make the world of difference to them. Check out their page and see the amazing work they do. On that note, any spare pennies would be very gratefully received ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

If you came to see us at NEOS last September, you'll have caught a glimpse of this beautiful desk before we started its restoration. Made in 1884 by Cutler & Co in Buffalo, New York, from American walnut it really is the rolls royce of desks and has been an absolute treat to work on. We gave it a full rebuild and refinish and it now sits pride of place in our customers office.
