Fuming vs staining: a ‘small’ decision with a big impact on how a piece ages.

Both change the colour of timber, but not in the same way.

Staining sits on the surface, it can achieve darker, richer tones quickly, but that colour lives in a thin layer. 

Fuming works differently: ammonia reacts with the tannins already present in the wood, drawing colour up from within the grain itself.

The result is a finish that’s part of the material, not applied on top of it. Far more resistant to scratches and everyday wear.

It’s a slower, less predictable process. But at Angus+Mack, we choose it because we want a piece to age well, not just look good on day one.

The finest work that has ever left this workshop was not always made by the most experienced person in the room.

It was made by someone who walked through the door with potential and the willingness to be pushed.

Who held themselves to a standard no one had asked for.

Who cared about the outcome more than the hours.

My job, the part of this work I did not expect to value as much as I do, is finding these people and giving them the support and environment in which they can become exceptional.

The craft is something you can teach. The desire to be exceptional at it is something a person either has or they do not.

When you find someone who has it, the responsibility is to not waste it. To challenge them correctly. To give them honest feedback when the work has further to go and genuine positive acknowledgement when it is excellent.

I have watched people arrive at Angus+Mack uncertain of what they are capable of and progressing to a point where they know precisely what great work they can deliver, and why it matters.

That, more than any commission, is the work that I personally find the most satisfying.

We do not only make high ended architectural joinery at Angus+Mack. We make makers. And the two are intimately connected.

The quality of what leaves this workshop is a direct expression of the quality of the people inside it.

The finishing space is where a project either earns its reputation or loses it.

What you are seeing on the racks is a custom to***co stain we have spent weeks developing in-house. Not selected from a manufacturer’s palette. Mixed, tested, dried, assessed in different light, adjusted, and tested again until the depth and warmth of the colour was exactly what we were looking for.

We built this space because we believe finishing deserves the same attention as the joinery itself.

The two are inseparable.

A piece made with exceptional care and finished carelessly is not an exceptional piece.

The result is something that could not have come from anywhere else.
