Pulpit installation for March 2026

Back where it belongs, serving the community for many years to come.

The carved shield with gold leaf is a new addition to the pulpit and symbolises the Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip Neri.

The key goal of any restoration project is trying to make the new look old. It’s where craftsmanship meets patience.

Matching grain patterns, replicating joinery work and getting the finish to look consistent on every surface (huge thanks to tutor Graham for help with that)

There are many sections in this photo that sit neatly alongside the originals. But which ones?

After hulking the pulpit back to the workshop, we began to peel back the layers.

Under the dirt and dust, beneath the flaking varnish, we found beautiful rippling oak, tight mitred joints and carefully crafted mouldings.

As with every furniture restoration, we needed to understand what we could save and what must be carefully rebuilt in the original style.

There was a lot to like here. But also plenty the needed to go.
