Some of the most revealing stages of a restoration happen long before the finished surface is seen.
An in progress piece exposes its construction, previous interventions and the areas that require attention. It is here that careful decisions can be made about the work ahead.
A quieter side of furniture restoration, but an important one.

The marks of age are not automatically flaws to remove.
Original fabric, fillings and construction can all form part of the history of an upholstered piece. Conservation begins by considering what survives and what can appropriately be retained.
It is a very different starting point from simply making something look new again.
