We travelled down to Portland to collect this impressive block of Portland Limestone from the Stonehills Whitbed seam, one of the island's most respected and traditional sources of building stone.

Back in our Chiltern Hills workshop, this single block will be carefully transformed into a bespoke staircase for a beautiful home in Knightsbridge, leading down to a newly created basement.

It's always rewarding to see the journey from raw quarry block to finished installation. With the right craftsmanship, a piece of natural stone that has been in the ground for millions of years becomes a feature that will last for generations.

From quarry block to finished fireplace.

These photos show just a small part of the journey that natural stone takes before it arrives in a customer's home.

It begins with a block of Portland Limestone, weighing several tonnes and freshly arrived from the quarry. From there, our team carefully measures, cuts, shapes and finishes each component by hand in our Chiltern Hills workshop.

Every detail matters. Every profile, every edge and every surface is worked to ensure the finished piece is not only beautiful but built to last for generations.

It's easy to admire a finished fireplace, kitchen worktop or staircase, but behind every project are countless hours of craftsmanship, experience and attention to detail.

This is what stonemasonry looks like behind the scenes.

Quartz and quartzite are often confused, but they are actually very different materials.

Quartzite is a natural stone formed over millions of years beneath the earth’s surface. Every slab is unique, with natural movement, veining and character that cannot be replicated.

Quartz, on the other hand, is an engineered surface. It contains natural quartz crystals but is manufactured using resins and pigments to create a more consistent appearance.

Neither material is better than the other.

Quartzite offers the beauty and individuality of natural stone, while quartz provides a practical, low-maintenance surface available in a huge range of colours and designs.

The right choice comes down to your priorities, your lifestyle and the look you want to achieve.

If you’re comparing materials for a new kitchen, we’d be happy to help.

What marble is trending for luxury kitchen worktops in 2026?

While classic Carrara and Statuario marble remain popular, we're seeing increasing demand for bolder and more characterful stones. Some of the most sought-after marbles for high-end kitchens right now include Arabescato Corchia, Calacatta Viola, Calacatta Gold, Paonazzo and Statuario.

Arabescato Corchia is admired for its flowing grey veining and timeless elegance.

Calacatta Viola has become a favourite amongst interior designers thanks to its dramatic burgundy veining and statement appearance.

Calacatta Gold remains a classic choice, combining a bright white background with warm gold veining that works beautifully alongside brass hardware and natural timber cabinetry.

Paonazzo offers a unique blend of grey, gold and burgundy tones, creating truly one-of-a-kind installations.

Statuario continues to be one of the most recognisable luxury marbles, prized for its bold veining and clean white background.

Each slab is entirely unique, which is why natural marble continues to be one of the most desirable materials for bespoke kitchen islands, worktops and splashbacks.

Which of these five would you choose for your dream kitchen?

A pair of rather grand Portland Limestone fireplaces, crafted from one of Britain's most iconic building stones.

For this project, we travelled down to Portland to source the stone before bringing it back to our Chiltern Hills workshop for fabrication. The finished fireplaces feature matching Portland Limestone surrounds, hearths and interior slips, creating a beautifully cohesive look throughout.

Portland Limestone has been used in some of the country's most recognisable buildings for centuries, valued for its strength, character and timeless appearance.

There’s something particularly special about taking a block of stone from the quarry and transforming it into a centrepiece that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Thinking about a bespoke stone fireplace for your home? We'd love to hear about your project.

A lovely project we worked on in Rickmansworth using Antalya Limestone, sometimes also known as New Cream Limestone.
-
We supplied and installed the stone around the swimming pool along with the surrounding paving and detailing. It’s a material that works beautifully outdoors thanks to its soft light tones, natural variation, and timeless appearance.
-
Limestones like this have a way of making outdoor spaces feel calm, warm and established — especially in the sunlight.
-
Natural stone and landscaping are a combination that never really go out of style.

Sun shining outside, but the factory is still in full flow.

The team are busy cutting, measuring, polishing, packing and preparing the next round of projects leaving our Chiltern Hills workshop.
-
Every kitchen worktop, fireplace, staircase and bathroom starts right here — with raw slabs of stone, skilled hands, and a lot of attention to detail.
-
It takes a huge amount of work behind the scenes to turn natural stone into something ready for someone’s home, and these photos are just a small glimpse into that process.
