I had a vision for these chairs since a long time ago. They were stored in my workshop - Red Hut and believe me you can't miss two extra chairs of this size there.
I knew I wanted to go to Edinburgh Fringe in August and I decided these chairs will go with me so I started working on them
Imagine early morning in August in Edinburgh. The city is still asleep, but it's sunny and warm. It's the time of a day when parking near the centre is still possible.
There's a few dog walkers, shop keepers and cafe staff are slowly getting ready for the day ahead.
It's quiet enough to notice rattling chair dolly on a pavement.
Nobody seems surprised when the chairs are staged in the middle of a pavement for a photoshoot.
It's Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Chairs are loaded and unloaded again only a few minutes later. The atmosphere changed a bit, the city is waking up. Now they attract more attention and I get a change to have a few conversations.
By lunchtime
I settle by Modern One gallery and start handstitching final details.
Sat in a shade, there's many curious passers-bys.
I have a few conversations
The back of the chairs says :
"I want to create more chairs, less content."
That seems to resonate with people.
There's a pressure on creatives to keep posting on social media and I'm not quite sure if serving algorithm is the best use of creativity.
Some people ask about fire retardant chemicals in upholstery and I'm surprised this topic resonates with general public rather than just my upholstery bubble.
I'm hopeful we're on a way to healthier furniture.
The main fabric is organic cotton and all the others are end of rolls left from different jobs, mostly wool and wool blends.
Both chairs are lined with 100% wool barrier cloth. That makes the chairs compliant with current fire regulations while the top covers remain without chemical FR treatment.
Now available from Alchemist Gallery in Dingwall.
