Traditional craftsmanship and creativity. Hand crafting traditional and designer furniture on the Ork

Born, raised and educated in Orkney, Kevin has been working with wood ever since his childhood. Growing up, he could always be found in the family garden shed making wooden items. His hobby developed into his passion and he left school in 1996 at the age of 16 to launch his much desired career as an apprentice with a well-known local furniture maker who had the reputation of high quality craftsman

The furniture that we make combines the use of machinery and hand tools.

Machines speed up certain parts of the making process but all the finer, detailed parts of the process are carried out using hand tools.

It's a very enjoyable part of the process ,making those refined, precision cuts. These photos show the use of a travisher to shape a chair seat.

The spoon carving class that we will be running in two weeks time is focused entirely on using hand tools. It's a class that allows you to design and hand make one of the first utensils that humans ever made.

There is still a space available for this class, please see our previous post about this class, if you require any further information regarding it.

August seems to be the month for interviews.

If you haven't managed to pick up a copy of We Are Makers or Landscape Magazine, to read those interviews, you can read an online interview that we recently did with Artisan Life.

It's been a fun weekend trialing our spoon carving / whitling class.

On Friday afternoon, some of our workshop team had a go, and on Saturday it was a catch up with friends while hand making a spoon.

We are running this class again on the 12th September from 12 o clock to 5 o clock, where you will be guided through each part of making a spoon.

There are four spaces available for this class and they are being offered at a reduced price of Β£45.00 each. For this, all we ask is that you are happy to be photographed for our website and social media, while making your spoon.

Please feel free to message this page or email [email protected] to book a space or to find out any further information that you may require.

With thanks to Janice Hopper from Landscape Magazine for travelling to Orkney to interview me about the work that we make.

Our work is so closely connected to the landscape that we work and live in, that it really is the perfect magazine to feature what we make.

Pick the August edition to see the nine page feature about us.

Following on from our last post, these photos are to show the size of the large Orkney Chair that we recently completed.

In these images, it is sitting alongside a standard gents size chair.

It's been great to be part of a project in a remote part of Wales, with interior designer Fallon Kirkum,

This set of three Orkney chairs are all made from locally felled Sycamore.

They are two ladies chairs and a gents chair that has been made to a much larger size than a standard chair.
